What are the officially used names for these controls/indicators in a cab?
  • The control that combines the throttle and brake
  • Switch that when toggled on ensures that power is applied before the brakes are fully released on trains with a combined throttle/brake, for use on hill starts (do any UK trains even have this?)
  • Buzzer for communication between driver and guard
  • Key that activates door controls
  • Light in cab indicating that all doors are closed

You'll probably find they have different names depending on the region but where I work they are.

1. Combined Power Brake Controller or PBC.
2. Holding Brake. On the units I sign this is automatic so the button doesn't do anything.
3. Signal Buzzer or Bell/Buzzer.
4. Door Key Switch or DKS.
5. Traction Interlock light.

387’s have a Hill Start Button but I know on some other classes of electrostar’s it’s on the side of the CPBC

On an 800 it’s on the CPBC but is redundant unless coupling

Will vary by company and traction and so will offer a few more names:
1. TBC, Traction Brake Controller

2. There are various types of hillstarts. Some units like desiros have a holding brake application so it’s automatic unless you’re in degraded mode.
Some units have a hill start button which will automatically release brakes after a few seconds of the power circuit being made like electrostars.
And some units have a hill start button which will only release the brakes once you’ve released the button like turbos.

3. CDL panel, Central Door Locking. Carried over from the days of Mk3s

4. Door Interlock
