it’s a fairly safe bet that standard class passengers and taxpayers will indeed be paying for 1st class refreshments.

The food and host (lower wage than safety critical role) compared to cost of an extra carriage (leasing and taxi charges) is probably insignificant. If a first class carriage carries 3 seats for every 4 it would be in standard, then - if it had same occupancy rate as standard - you need to sell...

    Unusual CrossCountry routeing... via Tinsley!

PSUL is your friend: https://www.branchline.uk/PSULintro.php - it is the Passenger Services over Unusual Lines list. Quoting from that:

    ASLEF strikes W/c 6th May

I don't think anyone thinks this way - and given the numbers widely quoted, it's a long way from happening. On this forum you have people who work in the industry (all areas) and those who genuinely want good things to happen to the railways - but not necessarily good things to those seen...

    ASLEF strikes W/c 6th May

Isn't there also an overtime ban? I think we're at the point now where the current government would get no value from resolving this dispute - 3% of voters think transport is in their top 3. "Which of the following do you think are the most important issues facing the country at this time...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Disappointed they've been allowed to cut back the original A shed again, and generally want to make something futuristic rather than in keeping. The A shed extended further towards Leeds until around 1984 - you could/can still see where the metal was cut still. It'll be about 2/3rd the length...

Railway Industry Association - A new strategy for delivering a lower cost, higher performing net zero railway by 2050

Perhaps the industry could try and produce a lower cost railway by 2027, not a pathway for one in 2050... Pointless tosh, there is a bigger problem right in front of them

GWR planning Saturday Bristol - Oxford service Sept to Dec 2024

Only if your connection is made! Having this - albeit only twice a day (hint hint, would like more) - improves connections at Swindon for south wales, particularly Swanseas which mostly don't stop in Didcot. Current example: OXF-SWA ( avoiding RDG due to extra cost ) Oxf dep: 11:32d...

Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire frequency and electrification

Passed two of the crossings today. Would this A board be after the crossing? If so, they are not there.. I also didn't notice anything unusual about the new 5mph sign.

Are Aslef strike day timetables gradually improving?

Strike law would not enable an RMT driver to stay at home and breach contract without reasonable excuse. RMT isn't on strike and hasn't balloted - but an RMT driver would still be perfectly entitled to call in sick, or refuse overtime and rest day working, or just be inflexible on the roster...

Rail Sail to Dublin - What Happens If Trains or Boats Delayed?

The sailrail ticket is a "CIV" ticket - which means that the ferry and/or rail company have a duty to sort you out - you can see an earlier thread quotes section 9.4 of the code here: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/sailrail-ticket-with-tight-connection.104278/

Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire frequency and electrification

Is 27 minutes on some diagrams. Also, that'd be timed (hasn't changed) for a 153, which is a bit of a lard-butt - 213kW for 41 tonnes (5.2 kW/t, vs 375kW for the upcoming 197s over ~50 tonnes (~7 kW/t). The incline from Tenby, IIRC is around 1 in 50 so power is needed - and would make a...

Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire frequency and electrification

I do hope that that's the plan, no reason why it shouldn't be but A boards aren't that common, or are they? First I heard of them was Birmingham New St. They have - incidents more than accidents - it takes a degree of skill to have an accident with a train that's blown its horn and is...

Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire frequency and electrification

Hard to say. I don't think the current arrangement has a speed limit once the stop and blow is complete, whereas the new method sounds like 5 mph throughout. For a 1-car 153, must be faster in the new arrangement by maybe 30 seconds - but if a 5-car IET - that's a long time to do 5mph if it's...

Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire frequency and electrification

The three stop, toot and go level crossings are being replaced by 5 mph passing. A video demo on Network Rail went up today: https://www.networkrailmediacentre.co.uk/news/community-alerted-to-crucial-changes-at-three-railway-crossings-in-pembrokeshire The line's currently closed for 10 days...

£48m boost for Penistone line service doubling and capacity increases

I can't see a good reason for moving 'south' by more than 25 yards.. The dog's leg is visible on Google maps and just moving the platform 'to the right' by 10 yards (which is actually east at that point) would straighten it.. all within railway land. Penistone to Denby Dale being 90mph might...

    OAO on HS2 in theory

I didn't think there was a HS2-HS1 connector? At OOC HS2 is seriously subterranean.. Paris or Brussels to Brum would be non-abstracting, and a cracker of a journey time vs the journey that is central Paris to Charles de Gaulle or Orly airports. There might even be ample spare platform...
