CAF Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

At the time the decision was made, wasn't the plan to have two mark 4 diagrams doing Cardiff-Holyhead work? There were certainly three trains each way with first class advertised between Holyhead and Cardiff in at least one of the PDF timetables TfW have issued since the change of plan was...

Ex LNER (and Grand Central) Mark 4 sets for TfW

From the 197 topic: Does the 6 diagrams still include bringing back the other two Cardiff-Holyhead workings or did the original plan for the additional mark 4s expect 7 diagrams from 8 sets with no serviceable spare?

Indeed; when the 170s were planned to be staying there would have been no 153s staying and only 3 mark 4 rakes (with those being only 4 coaches each). Actually, in the longer-term the 170s were intended for Pembrokeshire and Heart Of Wales so Cambrian359 is correct that it is 197s and 153s that...

    Class 175 future speculation

As I understood it the post I was responding to was talking about GWR - ie. no 6-car units available in the GWR fleet and the only 5-car units in the GWR fleet are the class 800s/802s (hence the 'InterCity fleet' by which I meant GWR's InterCity fleet). My view is that every new unit should...

    Class 175 future speculation

They've worked it yes; what I don't know is whether they have to use SDO/local-door anywhere on that route. Going by the rest of you response, I'm guessing they are able to open all doors on a 5-car formation at every station on the Cardiff-Portsmouth service. Yes, but based on the above I am...

    Class 175 future speculation

Would a 5-car 158/165/175 formation fit at all the platforms on that route (Portsmouth)?

    Class 175 future speculation

Thanks. I guess for Cardiff-Penzance the traction changeover can only be done manually during the call at Patchway, or are there balises between there and wherever the wires end on the Filton line?

    Class 175 future speculation

Yes, including my uncle on a pair of Turbos from Portsmouth that split at Bristol rather than both units going through to Cardiff. Even if just one door can open on each unit, that would do. If all doors fit on Cardiff-Portsmouth but don't on Cardiff-Penzance, or only one of the two has/needs...

CAF Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

In Arriva days I think it was often said that three class 158s were normally booked to visit south Wales (ie. NOT on Cambrian-Birmingham-Holyhead diagrams), for example on Saturdays I think it was the 06:30 Manchester to Milford Haven and return that was booked 158 as one of the three. So...

    Class 175 future speculation

That, or use the 175s on Cardiff-Portsmouth in 5-car formations as the first step of a cascade which ultimately puts 158s onto Penzance-Cardiff in place of 80x. Which would make the 158s better-suited for that route (with the 175s doing Cardiff-Portsmouth, which I assume would benefit from being...

CAF Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

I've done a much longer trip (Preston to Crewe if I recall correctly) on a refurbished Pendolino than I have on a class 197 (Shrewsbury to Wem), so admit I need to give the 197 seat a longer test, but the seats on both seemed rather concrete to me. I think the longest trip I've done on an 80x is...

    Class 175 future speculation

Probably not as bad as the EMR 180 driving cars anyway - similar to the middle coaches perhaps.

    Class 175 future speculation

Agreed, I would like to see them leave the white bits white and paint the red bits into GWR dark green. However, there's also the (slightly blueish?) dark grey window band to consider - I think that might clash with the green and might be harder to redo in GWR dark green without a full repaint.

Those were franchise bids not rolling stock bids. CAF were not in the running for the franchise competition. The four bidders in the franchise competition were: KeolisAmey (NOT CAF, CAF were a rolling stock supplier) MTR Abellio Arriva

    InterCity 225 diagrams after December

Says "LNER (from Sunday 2nd June 2024)" at the top of the PDF file (downloaded from the 225 group website) for me. Perhaps you need to clear your web browser's cache?

Both are correct aren't they? My understanding was that ERTMS is the whole thing (including GSM(R) radio) with ETCS specifically being the in-cab signalling aspect (in other words, stock used on the Cambrian has to have ERTMS, which means it has to have ETCS since ETCS is part of ERTMS). Am I wrong?

    Class 175 future speculation

If the ROSCO was demanding a 10 year lease until 2030 to get a return on the investment in PRM toilets etc. presumably TfW could have applied for a 3yr dispensation from the PRM requirement? There was also an alternative (on paper) in the form of the class 769s, which the ROSCO in question were...
  18. R

    Class 175 future speculation

Indeed. I was quite surprised that the ROSCOs allowed TfW (for exmaple) to have a relative short lease on the 150s after spending rather a lot doing PRM work on them (PRM only required from 1st Jan 2020, so they spent all that money for only a bit over four years use if the 150s are scrapped in...

    InterCity 225 diagrams after December

Indeed. I also think I read somewhere that LNER routinely substitute one of the four IC225 diagrams each day (but not always the same diagram) with an 80x, so only three IC225s are normally out. Not sure if that is still the case or even if it was true to start with. I note that the diagrams on...
