    As a track renewals contractor to Network Rail, we used to have to submit our possession requests 52 weeks out. Sometimes for big disruptive jobs, possessions and key resource requests could be planned in about 5 years out.

    Long distance track machine workings.

    I do remember one move that could be classed as long. A Gopher ( Ballast Undercutter) from Holbeck to Sunderland via Northallerton and the coast line. Took 2 nights due to the slow speed of about 25 mph, this would be around 1993. It was returned by road.

    I should add though, NWR are usually pretty good at giving advance notice of any renewal work. Maybe not so good on the one night jobs.

    One thing to consider. The Monk Fryston area as has been said is a 4 track line and with heavy freight traffic. That means that the track itself tends to wear out a bit faster than some other locations. I know from personal experience that this area does tend to see Tampers and other machines...

    I need to get to the Ashville Trading estate at Abingdon South of Oxford on Monday 19th from York. I think my best option is XC from York - Birmingham XC Birmingham - Oxford Bus x 2 to the Community Hospital in Abingdon and then walk. Is there a quicker / better way? Is there a nearer station...
