Good afternoon
My usual evening train from Nottingham to Leicester is showing cancelled at the moment. Should depart at 17:50 from Nottingham.

Purely out of interest:
1. does anyone know why
2. is there any likelihood of it being reinstated
3. is this likely to be a long term issue or just today

Thanks for any help

1. Shortage of train crew.
2. Highly unlikely it will be reinstated (you should be able to use your ticket on another service and/or claim delay repay).
3. A long term issue.

To clarify, this doesn't necessarily mean that the 17:50 will be cancelled on a regular basis. Like most EMR services, on an individual basis it is rarely cancelled (over the last 100 days, it's only been cancelled once before, which was due to the impact of a fatality). But rather that sporadic cancellations are likely to continue on an ongoing basis due to EMR, as with most operators, being short of traincrew.

Yes indeed - thanks - put rather better than I managed!

Again out of interest, why are some operators short of traincrew? And is it mostly a shortage of drivers or guards?
Thanks again

Both, albeit drivers more so.

The reason is because it is cheaper to employ fewer traincrew than the minimum necessary to run the required service, and rely on voluntary overtime to make up the numbers. This can be lead to issues during periods of high sickness absence, or industrial unrest where people are less willing to spend their days off at work.
