According to Modern Railways, the contract announced today for Cross Country includes an additional 7 Voyagers once released by Avanti WC, to replace the capacity lost by the withdrawal of the HSTs. So for a service that has been in dire need of additional rolling stock for many years, the best it gets is a replacement of capacity lost, rather than any longer term increase. Wonderful!
Following the withdrawal of its HSTs, CrossCountry is to take on seven additional Class 221s released by Avanti West Coast following the arrival of new Hitachi trains there, adding to the 58-strong fleet of Class 220s and Class 221s CrossCountry already operates.
Extra Voyagers in new CrossCountry contract
Full fleet refurbishment and direct Cardiff to Edinburgh service also planned
