Does anyone know if anything remains of Abercynon North station (such as the platform)? I cant seem to find any photos or information of this station since it closed in may 2008 when all services were transferred to Abercynon South.

It wasn't a very substantial structure as far as I can remember. I doubt they would have left anything when it was taken down.

Thanks for the info. Its a shame that hardly anything remains of it. I didnt realise quite how close Abercynon North and Abercynon South were to each other.

IIRC they were on two different lines so to get from one to the other you'd have to travel via Pontypridd...

When the track was rationalised in the 1980's only the up platform was used for trains to and from Merthyr and the Merthyr line was singled. The down platform was disused. Coal trains to and from the Cynon Valley diverged just south of the station and used what was the up freight avoiding line and so did not pass the platform. Incredible short-sightedness really since the Aberdare line was already being used for excursion trains to Cardiff. Even more incredible was choosing to build a separate platform further up the line in 1988 when the regular service started instead of remodelling the trackwork.

I suppose the prevailing thought at the time was that it's cheap, much cheaper than messing with track and signalling.

But done that way because it was cheaper. On a par, really with constructing a new side platform at Pontypridd rather than the expense of restoring a wider bridge over the road too allow use again of the down side of the massive island platform.
