Is anyone aware of a potential problem with registering on the contactless website whilst using an apple iphone as it appears impossible to recover the full 16 digit code from the apple phone?

You register using the normal card number. It will show as seperate cards after you use Apple Pay but you only need to register the actual physical card on the TfL account.

You register the number on the physical card. TfL have a specific agreement with Apple for that (or some sort of hash of it) to be passed to them in some manner (which is very unusual, most retailers don't, e.g. if you buy a ticket using Apple Pay for TVM collection it shouldn't require the original card unless any TOC also does).

Google Pay passes the card number to the merchant anyway.

Yes, I tried that but it has singularly failed for me despite removing and adding the card multiple times.

I had a similar issue. I contacted TFL on the phone and they gave me some instructions. My virtual cards appeared after doing the following:
- Remove all cards from your TFL account
- Wait 24 hours
- Carry out a journey using your physical bank card, not a device.
- Wait 24 hours
- Re-add your physical card to your TFL account. After a day or two, virtual/device cards will show up.

It's quite convoluted, but this did work for me, after trying everything else. Apparently these precise steps (with the waiting) trigger some sort of special reset in the linking process. Hope it works for you too!
