My girlfriend has an advance single booked from Euston to Stockport on the evening of the 19th December.

As it’s an advance ticket we usually take that to mean that it’s only valid on a specific service, however, it says ‘valid until 20 Dec 2024’ on the ticket.

This makes it look like it’s valid for travel on the next day, which contradicts the usual advance single restrictions.

What does ‘valid until’ mean in this case? She is looking to change her travel plans to the following day, without incurring an admin fee.

"Valid until" isn't really a concept that's applicable to Advance tickets. They are only valid on the train(s) shown in the booked itinerary, whether that is on one day or (in the case of some longer journeys) spread over two days.

If you want to travel on a different day, unfortunately you will have to change your Advance - this can either be to another Advance, or to a walk-up fare (which could include the cheap "West Midlands & Northern" fare). You'll have to pay any difference in fare plus the admin fee the original retailer charges.

Not all retailers charge an admin fee for changes to Advance tickets, so it might be worthwhile using one that is fee-free in future. The fee-free TOC ones I know of are XC and TPE, whilst the fee-free third-party retailers I know of are Ticketyboo and Railsmartr. Some also only charge a £5 admin fee rather than £10.

By any chance, is the advance for the 22:03 from Euston? That arrives at Stockport after midnight, which might explain why it says "valid until 20 Dec 2024".

It’s for the 18:33 service, getting in at 20:35

That’s a very strange Advance, it doesn’t appear to state a particular train. Is there another piece to it?
Avanti Advance e-tickets shown in the app and wallet don't show a particular train for some reason, I think you have to press the info button in order for it to show.

Did she buy this from the Avanti website (or app)?

The format does not look like any RSP-approved format (i.e. complying with industry retail standards) - it seems like a mixture of the formats for Advance tickets and walk up tickets, perhaps rendered in the Avanti app?

It's not the first time they have got things completely wrong.
