Does anyone know why Ilford has so many spare 317's?
It has an allocation of 72 317's for 55 diagrams, which leaves 17 spares.

722 I don't think we'll be seeing in service again - so that's one down for the count.

I don't think that they ever were the most reliable units.

Agreed with D365, 722 has become a christmas tree. It had AC traction fitted but hasn't really had much work since.

With regards spare units, keep in mind how many are stopped on maintenance at any one time and have you also factored in any additional diagrams since the 317/3s joined GA from GN?

I can tell you that there are rarely too many occasions where there are that many service-fit spares. As these things are quite old they need a lot of attention so there are often quite a number stopped.

I hope that helps and isn't just nonsense which only made sense in my head!

The LO 315 allocation is very tight too. A pair of 317s are cover for when 315 availability dips.

The franchise award requires in the next two years 26 of them to be modified for 2020 compliance and to be fitted with selective door opening, to allow longer trains; as not all the new Aventra fleet will be in service in time. That's going to need quite a few to be away at once.

When was the last time 317722 ran in service, or at all?

Not sure but I can find out for you. Probably about a year or so.

To answer mikectrpanel, it's on site yes but whereabouts in the yard I'm not sure. I think out the back. They use it for parts.

I have! The May 2017 diagrams are 42 (21 317/5 & 21 317/6) WA, 11 LO, 2 GE = 55. 4 spare LO (to cover for only 1 spare 315) = 59 Less 317722 still leaves 12 spare for WA services.

Sadly I don't think we'll see 722 in service ever again which is a shame because I never got to ride it:cry:

Hrmm interesting. I'll ask some people in the know where they're all at.

Not doubting you but just curious; I know there are some 317s which are shared between GA and LO (and often come into Liv St as a LO service and leave as a GA service); how do those factor into the diagrams? Is that under the 11 for LO?

LO have 11 diagarms IL732-741 (WA) & 700 (Rom-Upm) plus they use IL44/45/51 which are WA 317/6 diagrams, so all are included in the totals I mentioned.
