The habit of ADLs going up in flames has now reached Berlin

In Berlin -Lichterfelde, a Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) bus burned at around 3:10 a.m. According to information from on site, the fire department responded to Fürstenstrasse after a double-decker bus caught fire. According to the information, the driver was able to get to safety in time. According to BVG information, he was just taking a break so there were no passengers on board
The bus was at a terminal with engine off when it self combusted.

Oh dear.. I am not a fire investigator but most bus fires that are the fault of the vehicle start in the Engine area however that area in the photo is the least damaged so may have been arson I.e. someone started it before getting off the bus.

Don't forget about all the E200MMC's that went on fire last year in Falkirk and Stirling. 3 in total

E-Bus fires in Germany seem to be pretty common. On 30th September 2021 a fire broke out at a Stuttgart depot destroying 25 buses and Stuttgart announced they were temporarily withdrawing electric buses from use. This followed a depot fire in June 2021 in Hanover which destroyed a building and 9 buses and a depot fire in Dusseldorf in April. Each time the operators withdrew electric buses from service.

Can't say ADL buses are particularly noted for catching fire in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire and Stagecoach have a lot of them - although not electric ones I admit (unless you count the hybrids).

Of course, bus fires are serious, but are things any worse than they used to be? Or is it that social and electronic media means it now easier to find out about such events?

Going back to National Bus Company days, my local operator lost an early Leyland National to fire at less than a year old, and several years later a few years old Bristol VRT likewise. That same company, in the years between privatisation and becoming a major group subsidiary, lost a further 2 Bristol VRTs, a Leyland Tiger coach and a fairly new Dennis Lance SLF, all to fires whilst in service, from a fleet size of about 350.

A poor record, or a fairly typical one? Certainly, as a historian of the fleet, I recall such events, but does anyone beyond the 'specialist' do so? I'd suggest that none made the news beyond the local paper, and some not even that, whereas now they'd be noted electronically for all to see.

Having spoken to two of the drivers involved in the destruction of their bus by fire, I'm certainly not down playing the seriousness of such events. I do though question what the true scale of such events is now, compared to in the past.

What of the Citaro that had more fires and eventually lost them market share
It is amazing now that is the first thing people think about that manufacturer. Not sure if it is fair or not.

Does seem to be a lot of EV bus fires recently, of course it makes a good story. When there are not as many EV buses anywhere as standard ones it will be interesting to understand why.

Well said. I don't understand how the negative mindset. Almost every manufacturer does have issues but some just tar them with the vitriol which is uncalled for.

Lothian lost a six-month-old Dart SPD to fire in 2003. It didn't stop them buying from Transbus.

What about all the Versa that went on Fire or the solos? What about all the cars or lorrys. I think people are getting overly excited for nothing if you look at the numbers.

Indeed, Optare / Switch seem to make vehicles which are particularly flammable. Enough that London (Go-Ahead?) seem to have withdrawn their fleet after a fire last week.

A fleet of electric buses have been withdrawn in south London after a double-decker caught fire on Thursday.

Transport for London (TfL) said electric buses on route 200, which runs between Raynes Park and Mitcham, had been removed from service "as a precaution".

Some elderly Dennis Tridents in Cornwall had a habit of catching fire a few years ago.

I agree, there's probably the regular amount of vehicle fires it just looks amplified because of how many ADL buses are out on the street these days

If you are one of the social media grifters you think only electric buses catch fire. I try to introduce realism by mentioning that buses have been catching fire ever since there's been buses but just get abused and countered with "Diesel doesn't catch fire"

The world really has gone mad, we're doomed as a species as the mob controls the narrative.

I can recall back in 2002 several Optare vehicles - a Prisma and two Deltas - being destroyed by fire within several weeks of each other. The Prisma was owned by First, one of the Deltas by Barnsley & District and the other Delta by Blackpool Transport. Thank goodness there was no social media back then or the grifters would have been slating Optare products left, right and centre.
