If the Arundel to Angmering chord was in place,, a run down the Arun valley would have been a diversion.

It is a possible diversion, with a reversal at Barnham. The fact it isn’t happening shows you how useful that diversion (and any putative chord) would be.

They reverse at Littlehampton now instead of barnham nowadays. But agree, to set up that diversion requires of lot of planning, can be done of course but really difficult to do at short notice. A lot of trains require double crew changes at both Littlehampton and Three Bridges when diverted that way for engineering work.

A number of the Victoria to Littlehampton trains were diverted via the Arun Valley to Littlehampton, but not all due to train crew.

In this case at Hassocks anyway they can divert some services via Lewes where they did divert a limited number of trains on Saturday so there are options.
