Drive to Taunton in car, would have traveled by train but my local station closed in 1966. Trip to shop to get cable so i can transfer SD memory card to iPad during trips away.

£30 later. Expensive but sometimes you need to buy official products, had a cheap one off eBay but refused to work because of apple blocking it.

Stop off at my favorite railway bridge by the rail station on the way home for some photography before going home for Sunday lunch and putting pictures on Facebook.

I'm in London Friday-Monday late October. Am booked on the Devon belle railtour on the Saturday but wanting to explore the area on the other days. Instead of a travelcard and just using underground is there a rail rover that you guys know of that would see me go a little further and experience different traction.

Remember the travelcard is valid on national rail services within the zones, so you can experience:

158/159 (SWT, inbound only)
165 (GWR & Chiltern)
166 (GWR)
168 (Limited chiltern services within the zones)*
171 (Southern)
172 (London Overground and limited Chiltern services
313 (Great Northern)
315 (LO & TFL Rail)
317 (LO, GA)
319 (Thameslink [if any left] and London Midland)
321 (GA)
345 (TFL Rail)
350 (Limited London Midland)
357 (C2C)
360 (GA & Heathrow Connect)
365 (Great Northern)
375 (South Eastern)
376 (South Eastern)
377 (Southern & South Eastern)
378 (LO)
379 (GA)
387 (Great Northern, C2C, GWR, Gatwick Express)
395 (Premium South Eastern)
444 (Generally inbound only)
450 (SWT)
455 (SWT/Southern)
456 (SWT)
458 (SWT)
465 (SET)
466 (SET)

700 (Thameslink)
707 (SWT)

Plus Class 90 locos inbound from Stratford to Liverpool Street

I've probably missed some which operate within the zones

Thanks for list Kite.

Oh I didn't know you could travel national rail with travel card, thought it was just tube, DLR etc.

Is there a guide to using national rail within zones

That's a big list, quite surprising really.

Certainly is. A lot of planning to do. Decided to head to York on one of the day and finally visit the rail museum after 30 years of wanting too go.

Wondering if I could some how return back to somerset via Birmingham and SVR maybe..

In 2006 some friends and I did a railtour from Bristol Parkway to York, we drove up to Bristol from Exeter and spent a very pleasant journey in mk2s on the way to York. Had my first and only ever visit to the NRM and then headed back on the tour. We had the front coach on the way up and rear obviously on the way back, I even got the front droplight for a while. It was pretty good. ;)
This was the tour (Photo by Matt Clarke).

Yes I think at some point. I've seen three of the preserved ones go through now, that's the above two light engine plus 044 on the GBRF tour just before it did its main generator in later that evening. I'm sure one will be down again though.
They were such a part of my growing up down here that I'd always turn out to see one go through.

I arrive into Paddington at 10pm, and my train isn't till 8am. Will be watching GWR class 57 sleeper leave but what other rail related activity could I do until 8. Don't want to waste money on hotel.

I know I'm not one to talk when it comes to long days, but you'll be shattered the following day! Have you looked at Easy Hotel, they can be pretty cheap... If you were wanting to do an all nighter, then there's always the Thameslink core, alongside the Hertford Loop that run very late. If you like buses then there's also the night buses. You can get some quite good sleep on them!

Are you arriving on the Friday night?

If so have a good session on the Night Tube ;)

You are going to be exhausted on the tour, let alone on the Sunday! As Kite says, just do Night Tube all night and you'll be well away :)

Don't know what to do, travelling at a more sensible time adds £60 to cost.

Chance to see IEP Exeter late tonight. Do I go out when I should be asleep for work. Tempting...

Fair enough, makes sense :) If you got out for the IEP, enjoy as I've yet to see one!

Started snowing so decided to stay in, plan was to catch HST down to EXETER, see IEP then get 57 sleeper back home.

Plus side saved £20. Which will likely go towards getting me to the bluebell deltic gala in october.

It's now March and I've seen nothing except HSTs and a few 66s. Have yet to see a single steam train but March is looking better.

March 11th-mainline steam into Bristol and Cardiff.
March 17th-Devon day rover and Exeter vintage bus running day.
March 31st-Swanage railway Bulleid gala.

Guys, is Gloucester yard viewable from anywhere other than passing by rail?

£7 return national express, Taunton to London vs £60 for same journey by rail and only an hour longer by bus.

Busy year, mostly Devon day rover tickets to photo various rail tours over the next few month, freedom of Severn Solent rover, railtour in October and finally visiting bluebell for deltic weekend
