I see there's a NCL-KGX fare of £59 for an Anytime Day Single route Lumo + Hull trains only.

I have to travel on Saturday 27 Nov, when journeys are longer due to railworks. There's a journey 0733-1148 with a connection at Doncaster, which works OK for me.

What is the situation if one or other trains is delayed/ cancelled? There are obviously not many other Lumo/ Hull options. Do I just jump on the next LNER and ask onboard to excess it up to a Super Off-Peak Single £76.25?

If it doesn't go to plan, you won't be the only person in that situation so the procedure to follow will be announced at the station or on the train. It would seem unlikely in this instance that the connection wouldn't be maintained so the only real issue is the Lumo train potentially not running.

As an operator specific ticket, I don't think the ticket can be excessed to the interavailable ticket, but it would be unlikely that nothing was done to enable the journey to still be made.

Seemed to go to plan today, subject to the Hull Trains service picking up delay further south.

You would likely need specific ticket acceptance which I assume Lumo have pre-existing Control arrangements for. A TOC-specific ticket cannot (of at least should not) be excessed to Any Permitted or another TOC or a geographical route. They are quite restrictive.

It's an advertised and pre-planned connection as per the Lumo website with Lumo staff allegedly at Doncaster to assist so I'd assume they'd make the necessary arrangements. Certainly northbound I'd assume the Lumo service would be held at Doncaster waiting the HT. Obviously not so easy southbound as the HT will have a path over the diversionary route to worry about. But as that's the planned journey by Lumo you assume that they'd have some manner of plan.

Indeed I'm fairly sure these fares only exists to enable the planned Lumo/HT service combo to be available in journey planners!

If the Hull Trains service is cancelled from King's Cross it will be down to Hull Trains and Lumo to make alternative arrangements for their ticket holders. Boarding an LNER service without specific acceptance being in place will result in you being asked to buy a new ticket.

Not that I'm promoting such an action, but when I had a Lumo cancelled at Edinburgh, everyone boarded the LNER service. No idea if ticket acceptance was in place for Lumo ticket holders, I didn't wait to find out as I was valid on any train, but everyone marched over and boarded the LNER which was then full+standing. No way many, if any, would have been charged given the numbers involved and the crowding on that already busy ex Aberxeen service.

However it's worth noting that if you were to miss the last Lumo/HT train of the day due to disruption, then LNER would be liable to arrange alternative transport if they're in a position to do so (likely meaning ticket acceptance).

Lumo and Hull Trains will be liable for making arrangements as the passengers will be by no means stranded and they have staff in attendance to do so.

NRCoT 28.2 guarantees that:
any Train Company will, where it reasonably can, provide you with alternative means of travel to your destination

Of course, if Lumo or Hull Trains staff are in attendance and are making alternative arrangements, it is unlikely to be necessary to ask LNER to assist.

Thanks all. And thanks for the heads-up that you can't excess that ticket onto LNER. That spoils that plan!

Yes, it seems it's a special service only available during the engineering works.

Oddly, the Lumo and LNER websites aren't selling the £59 fare, only the £76.20. Trainline is.

Lumo cannot normally call at Doncaster - this is only due to the line restrictions due to engineering work - so they are unlikely to have staff there. But if you get a ticket as you say, if there is disruption, it is the railway's responsibility to find a way to get you there. You will need approval for any other operators services - either if there is an announcement, or by asking station staff to contact control

On the contrary, due to the planned disruption they're probably more likely than normal to have staff there to assist passengers.

That sounds logical in theory, but is it the reality?

It does say on their website that they'll have staff at Doncaster.

I suspect, as they’re only operating the one train from Edinburgh to Doncaster, it’ll be the case that the two or however many ambassadors on board will then take the passengers/show them to whatever platform the Hull Trains will arrive on.

I would agree with this interpretation, which would mean that the staff would not be there if the Lumo inbound was cancelled. But there will be station staff who can contact the required control. I don't think planning for the worst is the best way to plan a journey anyway

Indeed, given the Lumo units are based at Edinburgh, and only one is running on that day, it would seem unlikely that the southbound service will be cancelled.

And the reality today is that a Grand Central train has failed north of Doncaster, just in front of the Lumo service. Looking at a 2+ hour delay.

Was at Doncaster on Sunday at around 1200 and there was at least one Lumo staff member there despite their train not arriving

So this ticket is in the system purely to cater for these engineering works then? It wouldn't make sense or even be possible at any other time as you could never change between Lumo and Hull Trains anywhere between Newcastle and King's Cross. I suppose in theory on any other day you could still buy the Edinburgh-King's Cross £69 version and use isolated chunks of its validity on each operator, getting between Newcastle and Doncaster by other means or on a different ticket. There may well be people on here who would do that just to show it could be done!

Notably an anytime single from Doncaster to King's Cross on Hull Trains costs more than £69 although it might not be easy to buy the ticket on days when the facility to use both operators is not needed.

I think it must be.

What I can't work is why the £59 ticket is not available on the Lumo or Hull Trains websites. I just bought it an hour ago from Trainline, paying a booking fee, but still way cheaper than the £76.20 fare on offer elsewhere. (I'm sure other sites will be selling it, just don't know which ones!)

(Of course ten minutes later I get a message from family saying the event may be off after all o_O )
