The original plan was to take the 14.50 from Penzance, however I would like to catch an earlier train if possible….

My ticket is the return portion of a super off peak return, the combination is Penzance to Plymouth restriction code w3, Plymouth to Axminster, valid via honiton, restriction code w3, and Axminster to Worthing, not valid via London terminals, restriction code BD.

Thank you for your expert help as always

Yes, that's fine. These are flexible (walk-up) tickets, so they're valid on any train, subject to the time restrictions associated with the restriction code.

Restriction code W3 (nre.co.uk/W3) says:
Applicable days: Mondays to Fridays
Outward TravelReturn Travel
Not valid on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 09:00.Not valid on trains timed to depart after 04:29 and before 09:00.

Restriction code BD (nre.co.uk/BD) says:

Since the quickest route (with your splits) generally involves changing at Salisbury and Southampton, you can effectively make your return journey anytime from 09:00 onwards.

thank you for this, but if i get an early afternoon train from Penzance then change at Exeter for Salisbury, would my ticket not be void as the swr train would call at Clapham junction after 15:59 and before 19:01?

Is it possible to run foul of the BD restriction on a Southampton - Victoria train?

The wording on the restriction is poor - the intention is only for these restrictions to apply if you are boarding at Clapham Jn/Victoria etc. at the restricted times - not if your train later calls at those stations at those times.

The phrase "not valid on trains timed to arrive London Terminals before 14:00" would also otherwise be misleading, as you couldn't use trains timed to arrive between 16:00-19:00.

The way the restriction has been implemented in the electronic data (which decides what journey planners will offer you) reflects this intention - there are no evening restrictions on arriving into London stations, only departing them.

Even if you did fall foul of the restriction, you would simply have to pay the difference to the Off-Peak Return, which is valid into London from 10am (so again, effectively no restriction given your other tickets). It's not the case that your ticket would be void.

Is it possible for the OP to be on a train entering Victoria before 14:00, hence run foul of the BD restriction?

Not with the restrictions on their other tickets - they can't depart Penzance before 9am, so the earliest they could be in Southampton would be 15:02.

Thank you. Yes, the wording on the restriction is poor.
I guess the only question then, is do I catch a HST or IET to Exeter?

Obviously we don't know the date of the ops outward journey but if it was me making this journey I'd have considered a Worthing to Cosham Off Peak return plus a 3 in 7 Freedom of southwest rover assuming it was within 7 days. A lot less restriction faff. better routing options and a bonus day.

Restrictions don't apply to a train, they apply to a journey between a pair of stations.

In this case, though, the wording (as Watershed says) applies throughout their journey to trains arriving Victoria/Waterloo before 1401 (etc) even though the ticket itself is not valid there.
(Though it is valid at Clapham Jn presumably.)
The restriction code is certainly inappropriate for the journey concerned, but that is another matter.

outward was 13th June, I looked at the rover ticket and it was better value to get the flexible split return tickets.
