Looking at the timetable I can never understand if Northern Rail operate trains on the Glasgow South Western line north of Carlisle or not. Does anyone know if Northern Rail do?

Also someone once told me that Arriva Trains Northern operated through services from Carlisle to Glasgow once. Does anyone know when this was and which route they took and why they stopped?

Cheers to anyone who knows.

There was a 158 that was extended from the Leeds -Carlisle service up to Glasgow via the WCML and return which operated until around 2005, the service ended as it was claimed they needed the line capacity for the faster and more frequent pendilinos and voyagers which would be easy to change onto at carlisle
I think northern crews do operate the odd train as far as Dumfries but I'm not sure if they use their own stock much or nearly always Scotrail 156 units

The Newcastle-Glasgow Central via Dumfries service is a joint operation between Scotrail and Northern using Scotrail 156s. Glasgow-Carlisle is a Scotrail service while Carlisle-Newcastle is a Northern service with each company providing crew on their own section. This means you can see Northern crew working a Scotrail unit. Northern stable a 156 at Dumfries each night which works the 06:42 (if memory serves) and the last one to Dumfries from Carlisle. A Northern 156 has made it to Glasgow at least once.

Wasn't there a panic that should the 158 fail, there would nothing available for miles around to assist ?

Having worked on that train for some time, the 0947 off Leeds, to my knowledge, it never actually did fail.

More often than not, our little 158 ended up getting battered at Carlisle, collecting passengers when Virgin's sets went missing. :P

Virgin didn't like the Northern Spirit train running north of Carlisle. Northern Spirit wanted to carry on running it. As a compromise, Virgin got their own way.

As driver9000 says, the Newcastle to Glasgow via Dumfries train is a joint operation. Technically it is a Northern service going northbound and a Scotrail service going southbound. In reality it is a Scotrail unit with Scotrail crew north of Carlisle and Northern crew east of Carlisle. There's a similar situation in the early morning and late evening, with the Dumfries shorts being operated with a Scotrail crew and a Northern unit.

I suppose those were the days before CrossCountry ran regular services into Glasgow and this was the only one of two services from Leeds into Glasgow Central.

I think I read somewhere Arriva Trains Northern operated the through train from Newcastle to Whitehaven that is now operated by Northern but I am not sure.

With it being around the time of Operation Princess I take it that happened quite a bit.

Yes they did, and Northern Spirit before them. That service has been established for quite a long while.

It was an unusual job, an ATN set worked by a Carlisle guard Newcastle-Carlisle, then west of Carlisle by FNW staff. Nowadays all blends in with the one Northern company.
