I was just wondering how many valid interchanges between stations there are on the NR network. I'm talking about having one ticket and being able to leave one station and walk to another to change trains. Like New Street to Moor Street or St Pancras to King's Cross. I know all the ones in London but was wondering if there were any more in the rest of the country?

Off the top of my head, those that I've used are:
  • Wigan North Western and Wigan Wallgate
  • Warrington Bank Quay and Warrington Central
  • Windsor & Eton Riverside to Windsor & Eton Central
  • Manchester Picadilly and Manchester Victoria
  • Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street (I think its officially using the free bus though)

Cardiff Central-Queen Street? What about a journey from, say, Crookston-Greenock Central - would that include a walk in Paisley from Canal-Gilmour Street?

Glasgow, Bradford and Gainsborough come to mind. Didn't the British Rail version of the GB timetable have pages which showed street maps for the walking routes between stations?

At one time there must have been many more - e.g. Rugby, Leamington Spa and Stratford on Avon in just one small area of England. But is Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Victoria the only such interchange to have been replaced by a new rail line and services in the last 50 years?

I don't remember ever seeing street maps in the GBPT, but there were certainly some in the Thomas Cook (as was!) European Timetable for some of the larger cities with station-to-station interchanges.

Bradford Interchange to Bradford Forster Square might be another one.

Also Falkirk High to Falkirk Grahamston.

Not sure though about Newark Northgate to Newark Castle.

North Camp-Ash Vale is one. In the same broad area I think Farnborough North-Farnborough Main and Dorking Deepdene-Dorking are valid, too.

I remember those maps. Wakefield was another one.
One I have done, many years ago was Sheffield Victoria to Midland

I used to do Euston to St Pancras and Euston to Kings Cross Thameslink without issue back in the day

The 'GB Rail Timetable' did mention quite a few other "useful transfers", which were assumed almost always to be on foot, including the following... (N.B. this is not an exhaustive list).

Burnley Central - Burnley Manchester Road.

Burscough Bridge - Burscough Junction.

East Croydon - West Croydon.

Gainsborough Central - Gainsborough Lea Road.

New Mills Central - New Mills Newtown.

Southend Central - Southend Victoria.

Northgate to Castle is one - offered as a route Nottingham to York via Newark as an alternative to changing at Derby/Sheffield/Leeds

Pretty sure the GBPT had maps showing how to walk between stations in the section towards the front of the book. Not sure if it was every pair as it were, but certainly a good number of them IIRC.

I recall on some trips in the pre digital era copying a map by hand from the timetable so I could find my way between stations where I needed to do this.

Paper European timetable still has the maps you mention, I feel sure (I had one last summer just not got it to hand at the time of posting to look).

You could well be correct. I never really used to read that bit, I would generally just skip straight to the table I required.

Liverpool Central > Liverpool Lime Street.
A lot quicker to walk than to go via Moorfields by train.
(And probably quicker than changing between Northern / Wirral Line platforms at Moorfields)

Settle to Giggleswick and vice-versa.
There is no fixed link between Settle and Giggleswick.

You're getting your wires crossed between fixed links and inter-availability easements ;)

  • Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street (I think its officially using the free bus though)
The fixed link data for this interchange is as follows:
WALK
From 0001 until 0759
5 minutes
BUS
From 0800 until 2000
5 minutes
WALK
From 2001 until 2359
5 minutes

Yes, it did have selected ones.

What do the "fixed link times" represent? Five minutes to walk from GLQ to GLC is optimistic, to put it mildly...

Indeed! Those pubs are indeed present in the data, with CRS codes and everything; your guess is as good as mine.
