Using the Avanti 0836 from Chester to Crewe tomorrow (30/10/21), Off-peak Day Return Fares for Crewe and beyond are showing as unavailable. as there are no remaining reservations.

How strictly is this likely to be enforced - would buying for an earlier or later non-reservable train allow standing travel?

Thanks in advance.

There is no enforcement at all. I have travelled on countless "fully sold" Avanti trains for months multiple times per week.

Reservations aren't compulsory, Coach U will be entirely unreserved so it's unlikely you'd need to stand. It's better not to book a random service as someone else might want to book that service and not know you can turn up and buy at the staion. Plus if anything does change for any reason you won't need to refund and lose £10 that way.

Coach U won't exist on a Chester to Crewe service, which will be a Voyager. It may be busy - they often are full and standing, although probably not at that time of day - but providing you can physically get on it, you can use it.
