37426 Wolverhampton to Aberystwyth
8 Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge
8 Devil's Bridge to Aberystwyth
37426 Aberystwyth to Wolverhampton

Bank Holiday Monday, £5 special, see posts 260 to 276 earlier on this thread for photos and more discussion.
Same for me, except I had it from and to New St and got two of the little kettles - one each way.

After visiting a couple of pubs in Aberystwyth, I was bursting for the loo on the way up to Devil's Bridge. Fortunately we had a water stop halfway there, so I was able to dash behind a pile of coal...

Also, 5th May 1990:

90036 New St - Carstairs
47470 Carstairs - Waverley
Beer and footy in Edinburgh, then a tram to Newcastle (unless this was the night I overdossed and ended up in Darlo...)

55015 1215 York – Peterborough
55011 1445 Peterborough – Kings Cross
40032 1635 Kings Cross -Huntingdon
55018 1804 Huntingdon – Kings Cross
The 1215 from York was 15’ late start due to a late HST preceding it, then got looped at Retford for the Up Flying Scotsman and 1245 ex Leeds to overtake, so we were 30’ late by Peterborough. I decided to alight there and drop back onto the following Hull – Kings Cross which I already knew was 55011. This was the right move, as we overtook 55015 at Huntingdon.

Wednesday 06/05/81
40198 1630 Kings Cross – Stevenage. I was working late shift in the booking office at Oakleigh Park when I got word this 40 was out. I “suddenly remembered” that I had forgotten to order some tickets to be printed, so rather than trust the ticket requisition to the internal mail I delivered it to the office in Stevenage in person! (Well that’s my story anyway).

Thursday 06/05/82
50009 0910 Waterloo – Tisbury
50023 1601 Tisbury – Waterloo
A visit to the Tisbury Brewery, which involved quite a lot of sampling of their products.

Tuesday 06/05/86
47712 1500 Glasgow QS – Edinburgh
47004 1615 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
47603 1637 Inverkeithing – Edinburgh
DMU Edinburgh – Bathgate and return
47715 1900 Edinburgh – Glasgow QS
I’m struggling to understand what I was doing here. Maybe I expected something more entertaining on the Edinburgh – Dundee circuit. I think Bathgate had just recently opened to passenger traffic, hence my trip there to suss it out.

Monday 06/05/91
“After the Lord Mayor’s Show comes the Dustcart”. So after the excitement of the Hereford event, I travelled back to Newport on a class 155 DMU (before they were all withdrawn due to door faults and subsequently converted into 153s) for:
47576 1718 Newport – Reading

Friday 06/05/94
Back In Germany, I spent part of the day doing various branch lines loco-hauled in Thuringia, several of which have since closed. 4 different class 202 “coathanger” diesels involved, plus a 219, a 228, a 232, and steam 01 1531,
41 1185, 94 1292 and 03 2001.

Well done for managing to record the number of the Hoover after the brewery visit!

I think I was faring slightly better than my travelling companion, whose belly was already of ample proportions, and expanded significantly over the coming years! It was definitely one of my better day trips.

Sunday 6th May 1973:

No travel today following my Fort William marathon the previous day, but I awoke to the sound of a stationary Sulzer engine chuntering outside the house and found Longsight's 5200 - extremely rare on the WHL - standing at the end of the garden on a ballast train.

No bashing for me today either, but on 6th May 1982 I did have a spotting session at Newcastle Central. Sightings included 40086, 40133, 40194 and 'my machine' 37216. 03059 was the station pilot.

DMU York – Scarborough
55012 1816 Scarborough – York
This was a return ADEX to Newcastle, and was the first Deltic working to / from Scarborough for many years.

Friday 07/05/82
40015 2300 Kings Cross – Leeds
The first move of a very busy weekend – details to follow …

Monday 07/05/84
40035 0816 Pendleton – Edinburgh Waverley via Manchester Victoria, Leeds, York
40035 1819 Edinburgh Waverley – Leeds
(ADEX).

Saturday 07/05/88
37430 1126 Abergavenny – Crewe

Monday 07/05/90
There was one of the Buxton 376xx series supposed to be at Manchester Victoria to work any additional services to Blackpool North on this Bank Holiday Monday. I needed most of them for haulage, so I set off early to cover it …
50034 0707 Reading – Paddington
90008 0820 Euston – Stafford
The plan here was to connect into the 0748 Bristol – Manchester at Stafford, then stroll across to Victoria. The 0748 Bristol arrived behind 86233 and sat for a long time with the driver complaining of a strange banging noise. I gave up and let it depart without me, 60+ minutes late – and it subsequently terminated at Macclesfield with seized brakes!
47555 1106 Stafford – Manchester Piccadilly
I decided the day wouldn’t be wasted. I strolled across to Victoria to cover the 31 on the 1502 to Blackpool North – which promptly produced 156 410 on this Bank Holiday. Doh!
At Preston, salvation was at hand in the shape of a required 90 …
90037 1708 Preston – Oxenholme
86102 1802 Oxenholme – Birmingham NS
47458 2111 Birmingham NS – Reading
Sometimes a day at home with the family is the best option.

Saturday 06/05/94
The German Plandampf was still going strong, mainly centred around Meiningen – Eisenach and branches today. Locos involved were 38 1182, 01 1531, 03 2001 and 41 1185. Other traction was 5 x class 232, 2 x class 204, and a class 120 electric. My overnight move was south to Nurnberg on the last IC of the day (232 376 to Probstzella for 120 140 to Nurnberg) then a diverted overnight – of which more details tomorrow.

Sunday 07/05/95
34072 1520 Swanage – Harman’s Cross, 1550 return
34072 1630 Swanage – Harman’s Cross, 1700 return

Nothing in my moves books for today, but from my class listings I can reconstruct something from Saturday 8th May 1982 when I obviously did some Hoover bashing...

85012 Crewe to Birmingham NS
50036 Birmingham NS to Leamington
50049 Leamington to Banbury
50026 Banbury to Birmingham NS
50032 Birmingham NS to Leamington
50035 Leamington to Birmingham NS

032 was via Coventry, the others via Solihull.

Warrington to Crewe and Birmingham to Warrington must have been non-Roarers.

40084 + 40057 1623 Paddington – York (return CFPS railtour) via Swindon, Gloucester avoiding line, Lickey, Birmingham NS thence as outward.

Wednesday 08/05/85
37138 1715 Glasgow QS – Edinburgh
DMU Edinburgh – Stirling
37085 1949 Stirling – Glasgow QS
The 1715 Glasgow QS – Edinburgh was a non push-pull peak hour additional, which was diagrammed to be a 47 but could produce the occasional surprise.

Thursday 08/05/86
86102 1505 Glasgow – Carlisle
85009 1713 Carlisle – Glasgow
A nice after-work bash. I always had a soft spot for the 86/1s, and Roarers were getting increasingly rare on passenger work by now.

Sunday 08/05/94
Back in Germany, I’d done the last IC south to Nurnberg to pick up the northbound overnight back to Leipzig from there. Instead of running back th way I’d just come, it was diverted first to Lichtenfels behind 110 391 where 218 416 + 218 210 took over for the rare run from Lichtenfels to Probstzella. They didn’t come off at the (former) border, instead working under the wires all the way to Reichenback (Vogtland) where a Kolomna diesel backed on. I walked along to the front corridor and noted 234 651 as the number – but something didn’t sound quite right. It was only upon alighting at Halle that I realised the 234 was being towed dead, back to its home depot for repairs. On front of it was 232 564. I’d scored some new track on the way, as we ran around the east and north sides of Leipzig to reach Halle, rather than across the south and west as I expected. The plandampf had wound down, so now there were a couple of steam loco repositioning specials to be done. 03 1010 took me from Halle to Berlin Lichtenberg in the morning, then I had a succession of electrics and diesels back to Leipzig, where 03 2001 (piloted by 232 028) worked the 1541 Leipzig – Dresden. After that I took an electric to Chemnitz for a well-earned hotel overnight.

Nothing half as exciting from me today, but nor is my 10th May entry from 2019. I might not actually share that, as it is simply 3 IETs on my local line. It *looks* like that one will have been a mission to go score beers and pubs, but still let's look at what I was doing in 2019 when I wasn't beerticking, and still near enough a year before cycling took over as my full time passion...

A major red pen fest that was! 99.9% sure this was one of those ultra long day trips starting with the 05:15 or so to London with National Express (you know, I can't remember when I last used National Express. I want to say it would have been on my January 2020 trip to LA and Kraków, but I just don't recall if that's just a dodgy memory) and the 18:30 back. Well in excess of 17 hours of travelling and bashing on those days, and it was always fine on the way there but the way back dragged so much!

I was going to see what I was doing a year ago on the new love of my life in 2020, cycling, and I'll not go into that. Looking purely for curiosity I saw I had no Beryl rides on 8th May 2020, then remembered I'd got my mountain bike by then. 41.25 miles in one day, which was my biggest single ride until October 2020 :D Ah yes the memories...

Just like CW2, I started the day having a 31 for haulage, but that is where the similarity ends:

31190 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04

Getting full value from my 5 Transparent ticket bus - Metro - train

There then followed another spotting session at the Central. Unusual sighting of the day was 20163; not sure what that was doing in the north east. 37262 also put in an appearance shortly before being reallocated from Eastfield to Inverness.

Five years ago. I'd been staying at Bournemouth for a couple of nights, and been to the Swanage gala the day before. And out until 6am (Bournemouth doesn't close early)...

"8/5/2016 - Gronkery and home

Yes, I stayed out far too late. And getting an hour's kip is not a good idea when you wake up at 09:10 and the bus you need is at 09:07. Fortunately, I'd packed everything, so stormed out of the B&B to the bus stop, but in vain. Plan B then - taxi to Branksome!

This gave me a +10 onto 444001, which I took to Wareham, for a bus down to Norden. After walking up to the station, I had time for a much needed coffee and bun, before joining several others on a pair of brakevans!

I was most impressed by the shunters. 08476 produced a sprightly performance for the run to the NR boundary at River Frome, whilst 08436 was nearly as good coming back. And there is no finer way than brakevan thrash to blow away the cobwebs of overindulgence...:)

I had time for one last run on the Swanage, with 31162 taking me to Corfe Castle, where I adjourned to the bus stop. A short ride back to Wareham, and I was truly homeward bound.

Throughout this trip, dud 444s had taken a delight in appearing, and 444040 was no exception on my train through to Southampton; however 444041 was waiting for us at Bournemouth, and joined forces there..Sourcing water and mints from Smiths, I then joined a late-becoming-later 158959, on which the aircon was u/s, for a slow and sticky run to Newport.

I had 50 minutes here, and was starving, so headed to the nearby spoons for steak and kidney pudding.
Back to the station, and I began to wonder if the East side of the Usk triangle was such a good idea when a wedged and dud (and I need lots of them) 150255 appeared for the long run to Manchester Piccadilly.

Things started unpromisingly when we waited 15 minutes for the southbound service to clear the single track chord; however I inherited a seat at Cwmbran and the sprinter produced an absolutely storming run up the marches, thrashing away with all windows open up one of the underrated scenic lines.

Back in Manchester, and I just missed the last through tram to Rochdale. Not to worry, the bus is faster at that time of night anyway! One last winner in 3108 on a Piccadilly Gardens leap, then dud 3026 to Shude Hill and the #17 bus home....

A great weekend. I expected 40013 to be a highlight, motive power wise, and she didn't disappoint. 08476 and 150255 were more unexpected highlights, and just as enjoyable."

Scored both duffs, the 81 and the second hoover. I think I'd had all the 86/2 and 87s by this stage.

Doing a unit to Dorridge to pick up a loco-hauled train. Probably the only move from back then that you can still do these days.

I'll be doing that move before too long, well probably Leamington but similar stuff.

The problem I had with the 68s on the TPE service was that in the train you can't actually hear them. Is it the same on the Chilterns or do the windows open? They are beastly locos and I've watched them thrash away from Leeds and Scarborough, but as I say inside the coach, not so much fun.

I was intent on heading to Scotland for the weekend. The first step was always to Kings Cross to check out the 2000 Aberdeen and 2015 Edinburgh departures, in the hope of something non-Sulzer. The fall-back was a walk along the Euston Road to cover the 2050 Inverness and 2055 Stranraer services, which usually produced Roarers. I alighted at Crewe to meet up with a few other people and gather some gen …

Sunday 09/05/82
After a day on the CFPS special from York to Paddington and return, I headed to Scotland to intercept the “Skirl o the Pipes” railtour:
46047 0124 Newcastle – Edinburgh via Carlisle, the only time I ever had a Peak over Beattock.
47269 0903 Edinburgh – Gartsherrie South Jn via Falkirk High, Cowlairs, Springburn.
The booked 37's (039 and 112) had been removed at Perth due to boiler failure. Cheers.
20081 + 20198 1005 Gartsherrie South Jn – Carlisle via Carmyle, Shields Jn, Paisley Canal, Barassie, Kilmarnock. Departing Kilmarnock the train struggled to a standstill on the bank, due partly to a dragging brake, and partly due to this pair of (ex Swindon dump line refugees) class 20s not working in multiple. One of the railtour stewards (!) got out and remultied the locos for them, and off we went, eventually achieving over 80 mph downhill, but still losing more time.
25303 + 25080 1545 Carlisle – Farington Jn via Ais Gill, Blackburn.
There is a general rule with class 25s that the electrical machinery differences between the 25/0 and 25/3 subclasses mean they seldom work well together. This was even enshrined in the freight train loads book, with reduced loads applying to mixed pairs. When we saw the best Carlisle could provide was 25080 (to provide steam heat) paired with numerically-alien 25303, all timekeeping bets were off. At this time there was a long 20 mph speed restriction just outside Carlisle on the S&C. The problem was, once we got to the end of the speed restriction there wasn’t any discernible increase in speed. Poor little 25303 was thrashing its nuts off, single-handedly hauling “boiler van” 25080 and load 15 Mk 1s. By Appleby (30 miles, which took well over an hour) we had accelerated to a stately 35 mph! Wilpshire bank was even worse, as there was a severe speed restriction over Whalley Arches viaduct at the bottom of the bank. We started off slowly, and got even slower, with 25303 pulling for all it was worth. Speed dropped to 15 mph and was still slowing when suddenly 25080 cut in on full power. Salvation! The extra power lasted a full 15 seconds, then cut out again, and 25080 contributed no more traction for the rest of the journey (which was by now several hours late).
86315 1930 Farington Jn – Birmingham New St
37178 + 37188 2120 Birmingham New St – Plymouth via Camp Hill
The eventual arrival time in Plymouth was well after 0200 the next morning!

Friday 09/05/86
47711 1555 Glasgow QS – Perth
47470 1720 Perth – Inverness
47470 2330 Inverness – Edinburgh
I’ve no idea what prompted this choice of moves, especially with 47470, which was a wreck of a loco. Maybe I was hoping for it to fail? If so, I was disappointed.

Monday 09/05/94
I concluded my German Plandampf bash with a track bash around the Chemnitz and Leipzig areas before flying home from Leipzig. Involved were 1 class 201 and 4 class 202 “coathanger” diesels, four class 143 and 1 class 142 electrics.

Catch up on German bashing. I lived in Germany from September 1986 to February 1987 and again from September 1989 to June 1990. Whilst I have been back several times since, I have not recorded any moves other than in those two periods. There were still lots of loco hauled diagrams back in the late 1980s. January 1987 I did a Tramper ticket which was basically an All Line Rover for next to nothing - I'll get to that in 8 months. For now, I'll catch up with moves from 25th April to 9th May 1990 when I was living in a small village in the Saarland served by these crazy class 212 locos. Google them.

I also tried to do some redline work on the local units.

For those unfamiliar with German numbering, anything beginning with a 1 is a an electric loco, with a 2 is a diesel loco, 4 is an electric unit and 6 is a diesel unit.

Wednesday 25th April 1990

212 345-3 Bliesdalheim to Homburg (Saar) - a 21 mile thrash

That was my one year anniversary of getting engaged and we went for a Chinese meal in Homburg. Misread the timetable and had to get taxi all the way back. Ouch.

Thursday 26th April 1990

212 345-3 Bliesdalheim to Homburg (Saar)
141 171-9 Homburg to St Ingbert
110 130-2 St Ingbert to Homburg
628 262-8 Zweibrucken to Blieskastel Lautzkirchen

Thursday 3rd May 1990

212 345-3 Bliesdalheim to Blieskastel Stadt (an 8 mile leap, but Blieskastel had a fantastic cafe where I regularly had coffee and cake)
628 284-9 Blieskastel Lautzkirchen to Zweibrucken
628 267-4 Zweibrucken to Blieskastel Lautzkirchen

Friday 4th May 1990

212 345-3 Bliesdalheim to Blieskastel Stadt (I would have returned ona bus, a bendy bus at that).

Tuesday 8th May 1990

The above moves were just going about my business. This day appears to have been a bit of a bash.

212 343-8 Bliesdalheim to Homburg Saar
212 343-8 Homburg to Blieskastel Stadt

I'll be doing that move before too long, well probably Leamington but similar stuff.

The problem I had with the 68s on the TPE service was that in the train you can't actually hear them. Is it the same on the Chilterns or do the windows open? They are beastly locos and I've watched them thrash away from Leeds and Scarborough, but as I say inside the coach, not so much fun.
Pre-Covid they operated one 'commuter set' with opening droplights. However, even with sealed windows you can enjoy the thrash from the front vestibule climbing the tunnel from Moor Street to Snow Hill.

Strange how New Street now offers nothing of interest and all of the action is over at Moor Street.

Typical fare for the Trans Pennine services of the day – you hope for a 40 and get a Peak or a Duff.

Saturday 10/05/80
A small group of 40 bashers decided to head north to sample some 40s in Scotland. It turned out to be quite an eventful day…
86019 0120 Crewe – Mossend
47546 05xx Mossend – Stirling
26019 0725 Stirling – Dunblane
40064 0737 Dunblane – Edinburgh
40158 0850 Edinburgh – Kirkcaldy
40064 1029 Kirkcaldy – Inverness
40029 1644 Inverness – Kirkcaldy
40173 2130 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
47518 2225 Edinburgh – Darlington
As expected the northbound Inverness overnight got an ETH 47 from Mossend, so we alighted as soon as possible. The arrival of 26019 was an unexpected bonus, so I took that for the short leap to Dunblane, there to await the key train of the day, the 0705 Perth – Edinburgh. We knew that if it produced a 40 then our day was settled, as the same loco would then work the 0950 Edinburgh – Inverness and 1644 return. A daytime trip over the Highland Main Line with a 40 beckoned.
Haymarket stalwart 40064 soon arrived with the 0705 ex Perth – to our delight. We took that through to Edinburgh, dropping straight onto 40158 on the 0850 to Aberdeen. We took that to Kirkcaldy, breakfasted there, then waited for 40064 to arrive, which it duly did. There was little chance for 40064 to show its true pace on the line via Ladybank to Perth, where there was a prolonged stop. We were awaiting the Inverness traincrew off the 0815 ex Inverness. That had failed at Dunkeld with 47270, which was eventually dragged in by 27111.
Once under way 45 minutes late, we lost a further 12 minutes in the hills, but all seemed to be OK as we “bucketed” downhill from Culloden towards Inverness. FIRE! The red hot brake blocks had ignited oil spillage on the rear bogie of the 40, and flames were now being whipped around in the wind. “You should see this side” said my mate. We swapped windows, and on his (right) side of the loco the flames were up to cab window height. This was getting dangerous, so I pulled the communication cord…. Which snapped in half without any appreciable effect. I grabbed hold of the loose end and gave that a tug, and then that snapped off as well, leaving me with a couple of feet of communication cord in my hands, and no appreciable effect on the train. Eventually we ground to a halt by Welsh’s Bridge Junction signal box, with the signalman shouting oaths at the burning 40 on his doorstep, and the police and local fire brigade summoned to put out the flames. Eventually order was restored, the brake reset, and we whistled gently into Inverness. Clearly the incinerated 40064 was being put on the naughty step, and so wouldn’t be working back from Inverness. We strolled over to the depot to have a chat with the running foreman to see what we would be likely to get. We found a man pretty much at the end of his tether, but he was good enough to spare us his time and views on life in general – and self-combusting class 40s in particular. “I’ll have to give you 40029, that’s the only thing for it. It should have cooled down by now”. That seemed an odd remark – but he then went on to tell us that 40029 had arrived on the York – Inverness motorail train that morning, and was fully on fire upon arrival at Inverness station. They had to get the fire brigade onto it for some time before the flames were under control. So ours wasn’t even the first or biggest class 40 fire of the day!
40029 was a diseased wreck of a loco. It was suggested that Longsight had derated a small pool of its class 40s to reduce maintenance costs. I never knew if this was just a foul rumour or whether there was any factual basis behind it. What is certain is that 40029 was weak. The idea of it having worked in on the York – Inverness motorail – the heaviest passenger train on the Highland Line – was horrifying. It probably burst into flames out of sheer shame and self-pity!
Heading south with 40029, we struggled up Slochd at a little under 20 mph, and lost a total of 25 minutes on the hills despite a clear road. For once I was glad to get off a 40-hauled train – although with the bonus of having another Haymarket stalwart 40173 right behind on the 1915 Aberdeen – Kings Cross. That re-engined at Edinburgh, and instead of a 40 or Deltic we got the very unlovely 47518. There was clearly a motive power crisis taking place, since 47518 should never have left the depot. It was low in power, and gradually getting worse, such that my planned move to York had to be curtailed at Darlington, by then running over 90 minutes late, all down to 47518’s inability to run at passenger train speeds.

Monday 10/05/82
Having done 37178 + 37188 on the 4+hours late return railtour to Plymouth, we hitched a ride on the ECS which was going back to Malago Vale. We alighted in the platform at Bedminster, then watched the spectacle as the pair of 37s refused to work in multiple and kept fighting one another, emitting huge clouds of clag and thrash – and very little movement …
37178 + 37188 0315 Plymouth – Bedminster
DMU Bedminster – Bristol Temple Meads
50022 0653 Bristol Temple Meads – Salisbury
50041 0822 Salisbury – Waterloo

Tuesday 10/05/83
47412 1454 York – Leeds
40012 1602 Leeds – Carlisle
DMU Carlisle – Newcastle
47523 2100 Newcastle – York

Thursday 10/05/84
55507 + 55527 (Class 141 DMU) 1350 Leeds – Huddersfield
47406 1453 Huddersfield – Stalybridge
55005 (bubble car DMU) 1520 Stalybridge - Stockport
86249 1633 Stockport – Birmingham NS
50013 1820 Birmingham NS – Swansea via Chepstow
43xxx + 43148 2154 Swansea – Carmarthen
33048 2338 Carmarthen – Cardiff Central via Swansea District Line
An assortment of DMUs, and other junk to get me to New Street to cover the 1820 to Swansea, which had been producing class 50s as part of a driver training programme. It produced, 50013, and this was the only occasion I ever had a 50 west of Cardiff.

Friday 10/05/85
37026 1820 Glasgow QS – Arrochar & Tarbet
37291 1945 Arrochar & Tarbet – Glasgow QS
As part of the class 37 refurbishment programme, a load of late-number class 37s were reallocated to Eastfield, prior to going into Crewe works for conversion into 37/4s, or other exotic subspecies. The problem was nobody knew for certain which locos would end up as 37/4s (i.e. common on passenger) and which would become freight locos. When I learned that 37291 was working, I had to have it. Subsequently it became 37419. Oh well.

Saturday 10/05/86
43062 + 43076 0655 Edinburgh – Aberdeen
This move was to cover 37035 on an Aberdeen – Glasgow Footex. It failed, and the train was cancelled! Doh.
47715 1105 Aberdeen – Glasgow QS
This being the season of the Skirl of the Pipes railtour, I negotiated a part fare to take me home:
81009 1535 Port Glasgow – Wemyss Bay
85010 2010 Wemyss Bay – Paisley UDGL – Gourock

That 1980 day is madness!
To add to the general madness, we were standing in the front brake vehicle as 40029 slogged across Culloden viaduct on the sluggardly climb out of Inverness. My head was between the window bars, and as I drew it back into the carriage my glasses got caught between the bars, the left lens popped out, and bounced out of the window to the valley below. The only way I could see anything was to blank out my left eye - which I did by cutting up a Joker from a set of cards I was carrying, and fitting it into the space left by the missing lens. So for the rest of the day I tended to attract funny looks from "normals" wondering why I had a Joker where my left eye should have been.

I've still got the length of broken communication cord as a souvenir (somewhere amongst all this junk ...)

A day late - 9th May 1989:
50035 Slough - Oxford 1F08
47650 Oxford - New St 1M20

Heading home for a break from work, via my 'pet' Hoover.

10th May 1987:
50010 New St - Cheltenham 1V95
47433 Cheltenham - New St 1S19
37162 Lickey Banker 1S19

An evening sampling ales in Cheltenham followed by the overnight back to Brum was a semi-regular event for us. Got some big syphons in the book that way. Even better when it was diverted and the 37 piloted from Worcester to New St.

10th May 1992:
87029 New St - Cov
86212 Cov - New St

Maybe going to footy?

None of the above caught fire!

What a fabulous thread. Set off all manner of memories. Things I’d long forgotten. Spotting and bashing from my yoof!

Such as having to buy a full fare ticket when you turned 14. I was still getting away with it When I’d just turned 15. Buying Midland Railtourer tickets for around £1.50 or an East Midlands Ranger for somewhere close to £3.50 ish.

Trying to bash Westerns on the 10.25 New Street - Pad service, heading to Solihull to hopefully score another one back into Brum. Usually we failed and scored a brace of Duffs. I’d have caught the 08.56 Long Eaton (home station) to Derby. Railtourer wasn’t valid before 09.00 on weekdays. 09.26 Derby to New Street. If it was on time you could just about make the 10.25 Paddington train. Seem to recall when the train south to New Street was late a Western was almost guaranteed. Bloody typical.

Later in the day we’d try for the 18.25 Pad to Leamington to hopefully score a Western back. This then made for a mad dash across New Street to get the 19.50 back to Derby from platform 8.

Patiently waiting at Derby for anything “interesting” on NE/SW summer trains. Interesting defined as anything but Classes 47, 46 or 45.The occasional 37, 31 or a pair of 25’s was good.

Bashing Deltics on the ECML between Peterborough and Doncaster on the East Midlands Ranger ticket. Staying out on Friday and / or Saturday for the overnight parcel trains with one or two Mk1 passenger carriages often with a Class 40 in charge.

Weekend walkabouts at Toton. It was about a mile from my Mum’s house. You could never get around it during the week. Too busy and guaranteed you’d get told to leave. Sunday’s were a completely different story. There was a footpath that gave almost a back door entrance. I could walk down and just wander about rarely would you see anyone other than other spotters. Row upon row of 08, 20, 25, 44, 45, 47. Later on 56s. Occasionally visitors from further afield 24, 31, 37 or 40s. The huge bank on the Toton side of the yard was accessible from Stapleford or from Long Eaton town centre, crossing the footbridge called Long Tom - quite a long walk to get up there mind!

The “Explore Britain” adex’s: LE to Aberdeen, LE to Edinburgh, Mystery Destinations (Tenby, Yarmouth, Brighton). Two that stick in my mind were a trip to Carnforth Steamtown and onto the Ravensglass and Eskdale Railway. Cardiff Canton Duff to Crewe, Class85 to Lancaster and a Class 40 for the trip around Cumbria. The second being the Edinburgh day trip. It was early November. I forget which Peak was heading us north. The return was a surprise 40 and the 45 double header as far as York. Some bright spark was setting off fireworks on the train on the way back.....air bombs being launched as we approached Newcastle.

The trips to Edinburgh and Aberdeen made me want to do a Scottish Rover trip. Finally persuaded my Mum to let me do it sometime in 78. I don’t recall if Spring Bank week or after I’d finished my O levels in June / July. Friend who was going with me was a little older and was working so I travelled up on my own and arranged to meet him at Newcastle for one of the late trains from there on Saturday night / Sunday morning. I set off back south from Waverley with an eth Duff hoping to get back into Newcastle for the meet. Train was delayed and it was looking decidedly unlikely I’d meet him. I kept an eye out but saw nothing heading north so thought it was likely his train was also delayed. I got into Newcastle and discovered all northbound trains were being diverted via Carlisle. Next train that came in bound for Edinburgh a different mate was on, we shared a compartment so could get some shut eye. Deltic “under the wires” to Edinburgh. Met Phil at Waverley in the very early hours. Took the next train north to get more kip.

Had an amazing week up there which included oversleeping on the overnight train to Carlisle (ended up in Preston) which screwed up some plans. Discovered Coatbridge Central was a real dump and was amazed anything actually stopped there. Ended up stranded overnight in Aberdeen sleeping rough in the bus station. All the more frustrating that the stock for the first Edinburgh service was hooked up to steam heating pipes but was locked. We did get some nice soup with the rest of the dossers though:) Lost my light meter on one of the Euston - Perth overnight trains but did get it back from lost property. Got in a lot of miles behind 40s, 26s, 27s and fortunately not too many behind 47s.

I’m hoping that somewhere I can find all my photos and notebooks. I’ve a feeling that a lot will be long gone but back then a lot of my photos would be slides so take up a lot less space. I’ve a box file or two with stuff in so I may be able to provide dates, details and pics.

Some great stories there. And welcome to the thread!
