Saturday 11th July 1981

Went to cousin's wedding in Oxford. Wadham College, very nice. It's their ruby anniversary today. I only have selected highlights of the haulage, but it's not too bad...

86/2 or 87 WBQ to Crewe
85028 Crewe to Coventry
50042 Coventry to Oxford

This was my first 50 for haulage and I only had it once more.

47231 Oxford to Birmingham NS. I believe this is now 57010.
86/2 or 87 back home, possibly with a change at Crewe.

Monday 11th July 1983

After the excitement of 40001 for most of the previous day, it was back to post-College electric bashing with an eye on the Liverpool, Manchester, Blackpool, Barrows...

86225 WBQ to Preston, 1P63 14.00 Euston to Carlisle
87029 Preston to Lancaster, 1S80 14.45 Euston to Glasgow
87027 Lancaster to Preston, 1M87 15.20 Glasgow to Nottingham
25192 (required) Preston to Lime St, 1M22, 16.20 off Glasgow. A rat! A rat?
Unit home

40126 did a late Blackpool (too late) and 129 had worked in the morning.

Friday 11th July 1986

Day 5 of the Coasts and Peaks and it's 100% Goyle with loads more mileage behind 257.

31257 Warrington C to Sheffield, 1E34 08.45 off Lime St
31257 Sheffield to Lime St, 1M30 11.22 off Sheffield
31454 Lime St to Birchwood, 1E44 13.45 to Sheffield
31427 Birchwood to Warrington C, 1M31 08.15 Yarmouth to Lime St
31257 Warrington C to Sheffield, 1E46 14.45 Lime St to Hull
31444 Sheffield to Warrington C, 1M38 15.40 Hull to Lime St
31440 Warrington C to Stockport, 1E64 18.45 Lime St to Hull
31431 Stockport to Oxford Road, 1M61 19.22 Sheffield to Lime St
31257 (of course) Oxford Road to Padgate (oh yes!), 1M56 19.38 Hull to Lime St

454 was my only true score. I'd had 431 as 253 from York to Leeds in September 1982.

40158 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough
55008 1854 Peterborough – Kings Cross
The 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough often produced a 40 at this time, so a trip to Peterborough, returning with a Deltic on the 1630 from Hull, was a nice way to start a weekend.
86232 2050 Euston – Crewe
40015 2322 Crewe – Holyhead
40015 was working the 2208 Birmingham New Street – Holyhead Fridays Only summer dated additional. It was timetabled non-stop from Crewe, and was supposed to follow the 2238 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead all along the North Wales Coast. However it often ran early enough from Crewe to get ahead of the Manchester train. This was such an occasion, so we arrived in Holyhead 30 minutes early, nicely timed to connect into the opposite working, the 0125 (SO) Holyhead – Birmingham New Street …

Saturday 11/07/81
I was still on a Scottish Rover, and I had planned to come to Carlisle to pick up the 2045 Euston to Inverness and Stranraer, which was booked to divide at Carlisle. It was a good bet for a class 40 from Carlisle to Stranraer, or so I had been told. What it got was 47019, so I was not best pleased. I decided to head for Perth for another day on the Glasgow – Aberdeen circuit with 40s, so I boarded the Inverness portion of the train, which was 45 minutes late, the class 85 accelerating through a series of small pops and bangs, thus: oooooooh POP [silence] oooooooh POP [repeat]
85001 0054 Carlisle – Mossend
When I awoke at Aviemore (oh **** I’ve overslept again) it was to the sound of a class 47 thrashing very hard but going absolutely nowhere. Having regained all the time lost further south, the 47 had now burst completely.
47435 02xx Mossend – Aviemore
At least there was the prospect of some big rescue loco being sent out from Inverness for us (or possibly not):
47461 0606 Aviemore – Inverness, 80 minutes late.
This fiasco left Inverness short of 47s to work their morning departures, so I was able to walk straight into a pair of 26s over the Highland Main Line:
26024 + 26040 1004 Inverness – Perth
The pair of 26s was the only train I saw on the Highland Main Line all week that was not a class 47, so I considered myself fortunate to have them. With my Scottish Rover validity coming to an end, I needed to find a decent overnight south. I gambled that the plans to get a 40 out of Stranraer that evening stood a decent chance, so I decided that the 2200 Stranraer – Euston was to be my way home. Thus:
27038 1405 Perth – Glasgow Queen Street
Walk to Glasgow Central
47452 1550 Glasgow Central – Kilmarnock
47517 1640 Kilmarnock – Stranraer
I had plenty of time to kill at Stranraer, so I walked back to the depot to speak to the chargeman. He confirmed that 40117 would be working the 2200 to Euston, and definitely not 47019 which was sitting there off the portion from Carlisle. As good as his word, it worked. I found myself a nice declassified First Class compartment, which I occupied for the entire journey to Euston. A fine way to end a rover. These are the locos involved, and the route:
40117 2200 Stranraer – Carlisle via Kilmarnock
(Sunday 12/07/81)
85025 0234 Carlisle – Euston via Bescot and Northampton
(Powering Carlisle – Preston, Stafford – Rugby, Northampton – Euston)
40163 (dragging 85025) 0357 Preston – Stafford via Golborne, Parkside, Manchester Piccadilly, Styal, Crewe
47433 (dragging 85025) 0749 Rugby – Northampton
Arrival in Euston was at 1010 Sunday morning, so just over 12 hours after leaving Stranraer. One of the better overnights. I even scored the 85.

Wednesday 11/07/84
I’m still (not) Working As Required at Leeds:
31426 0804 York – Leeds
31443 1235 Leeds – Saltaire
40122 1305 Saltaire – Leeds
45110 1400 Leeds – York

Thursday 11/07/85
After spending the evening with some fellow cranks in Stirling, I did an overnight to Carlisle to position me in Glasgow to cover the 0820 to Oban, which was supposed to be a 37/4 that day:
47543 0035 Stirling – Mossend
81007 0132 Mossend – Carlisle
81019 0355 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
81s both ways – not to be sniffed at. Now for the main business of the day.
Walk Glasgow Central – Glasgow Queen Street
37401 0820 Glasgow Queen Street – Oban
37401 1300 Oban – Glasgow Queen Street
This was the first ever run of a 37/4 to Oban. We nearly didn’t make it past Cowlairs. The driver had been instructed to open the power handle wide at the platform end, and let the electronics sort out any wheelslip issues. The problem was that as originally programmed the wheelslip device would cut power for a mere fraction of a second before applying it again in full, triggering more wheelspin. The result was that the coaches were bouncing off the loco buffers as we got dragged up the hill in a series of violent lurches. How close we came to bursting a coupling I’ll never know, but it was a most unpleasant experience. After that, the technical rider realised there was some fine tuning needed to that particular aspect of the power controls, and we carried on a lot more sedately to Oban and return.
Meanwhile, on the south side of Glasgow, required 37265 had worked a Nelson to Largs ADEX forward from Polmadie, and was allocated back again in the evening:
Walk Glasgow Queen Street – Glasgow Central
DMU Glasgow Central – Largs
37265 1740 Largs – Polmadie
85011 1853 Polmadie – Carlisle
87005 2059 Carlisle – Glasgow Central

Can you remember why 37 108 was attached to the front of the sleeper at Dumbarton Central?
Sorry, no idea. Maybe just to avoid a path for a light engine working? Or maybe it had just come off exam and needed a test run? We weren't complaining!

After the rat on the Monday, would 1M22 produce a 40 today on this post-College bash? First the electric bashing...

86103 WBQ to Preston, 1P35 15.13 Crewe to Barrow
85006 Preston to WBQ, 1M06 10.35 Stranraer to Euston
87006 WBQ to Preston, 1S80 Euston to Glasgow

Nice selection, then...

Oh dear...

47196 Preston to Lime St, 1M22 16.20 off Glasgow
Unit home to Padgate

Saturday 12th July 1986

Day 6 of the Coasts and Peaks and almost a total Goyle day again...

31257 (again!) Warrington C to Sheffield, 1E29 07.38 Lime St to Cleethorpes
31431 Sheffield to Oxford Road, 1M32 10.22 to Lime St
31125/31440 Oxford Road to Longsight, 1E85 Lime St to Yarmouth

I presume one or both of the Goyles failed, because...

47001 Longsight to Sheffield, 1E85
31299/31403 Sheffield to Lime St, 1M31 08.15 off Yarmouth
31403/31299 Lime St to Sheffield, 1E52 16.45 Lime St to Sheffield
31247 Sheffield to Lime St, 1M61 19.22 off Sheffield
31431 Lime St to Warrington C, 1E54 21.45 Lime St to Sheffield.

14 hour day. Not sure I could do that now! Scored the Duff and the three Goyles 135, 299, 247.

Friday 12th July 1991

10 days before my first daughter was born and I must have been on a training course in Reading.

Tram Oxford to Reading
47526 Reading to Oxford, 16.50 off Padd

I had to go to Manchester for a job interview as a Catering Assistant in Manchester Victoria station for Travellers Fare.
47522 1147 York – Manchester
This was 15 minutes late start, as the incoming train ran late and it only had a 15 minute turnround at York – which was a bit ambitious for a loco-hauled set. After the interview I set about returning to York, but everything from the Liverpool direction was cancelled due to a gas leak at Rainhill. A Trans Pennine service staggered in behind failed 47271 and terminated, so the stock off that was used to form an 1810 Manchester Victoria – Newcastle relief.
45021 1810 Manchester Victoria – Leeds
We called at Stalybridge, Huddersfield, and Dewsbury, and still made it to Leeds in under an hour. On arrival at Leeds the train sat for some time, and was then cancelled, having originally been announced as a through train to Newcastle. Next 47522 arrived on what was possibly the 1605 ex Liverpool (arriving Leeds at 1935), and that too sat for some time with no crew. Finally the 1805 Liverpool – York rolled in with 47411, so I took that.
47411 1959 Leeds – York
It had taken me nearly 4 hours from Manchester Victoria to York. Not a good day.

Saturday 12/07/80
Having arrived at Holyhead behind a class 40 in the wee small hours, the best way to depart was behind a different class 40 as soon as possible!
40012 0125 Holyhead – Crewe
83011 0350 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
85039 0628 Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton
86210 0700 Wolverhampton – Euston
I was hoping for something a little better than an 86/2, but I had no choice but to take it, as I had to report for my Saturday job as Train Trolley Caterer:
86229 1025 Euston – Crewe
Evidently the 1025 Euston – Llandudno got its diagrammed ETH class 47 forward from Crewe, so I alighted to refill my hot water urn from the station buffet. All I had to do now was catch a later train along the coast to intercept the 1605 Llandudno – Euston to finish off my diagrammed work:
40069 1418 Crewe – Chester (My machine!)
40094 1540 Chester – Rhyl
47462 1638 Rhyl – Crewe
86229 (again) 1809 Crewe – Euston

Tuesday 12/07/83
By now the ranks of class 40s were already heavily diminished by withdrawals, but there were still a good few knocking around, and I still needed one of the active locos for haulage. That was 40090, so when it dropped into my lap by working a schools’ charter from Rhyl to York I couldn’t say “No”!
40090 1800 York – Rhyl via Manchester Victoria
My 173rd class 40 for haulage – I could do no better.
47534 2201 Rhyl – Crewe
(Wednesday 13/07/83)
47468 0011 Crewe – Stockport
45133 0050 Stockport – York via Guide Bridge

Thursday 12/07/84
Still Working As Required at Leeds
46229 0835 York – Leeds via Harrogate (Scarborough Spa Express)
On arrival in the Control Office, I was met by a number of my former colleagues who were all looking very sombre and wearing black arm bands (fashioned from bin liners). I was told this was in remembrance of one of their colleagues who had worked hard in Leeds Control, but was now being exiled to live amongst the Heathens in the Frozen North i.e. Glasgow. This was their way of breaking the news to me that I’d got the job I’d applied for in Glasgow Control. Wow, life is going to change a bit in the coming weeks. First I’d better go home and break the (good?) news to the Domestic Authorities. Thankfully, at least that’s the end of all this “Work As Required” malarkey.
45139 1200 Leeds – York
Then later that evening it was time for more steam:
46229 1805 York – York via Leeds and Harrogate.

Friday 12/07/85
It had been a hellish late shift in the office, with three simultaneous class 37 failures on passenger trains on the West Highland Line, and a lot more going on besides. There were engineering works on the WCML in the Crewe area, so a relief overnight Glasgow Central – London train was running via Edinburgh to Kings Cross. It was allocated a pair of 27s from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh, and the route was unusual too, in that it was running via the R&C Line from Rutherglen via Carmyle to Coatbridge Central then north via Garnqueen Jn and Falkirk Grahamston. It had to be done, especially as required NB 27030 was one of the pair:
27002 + 27030 2355 Glasgow Central – Edinburgh Waverley (continued tomorrow) …

Saturday 12/07/86
47701 1330 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
After an early shift in Glasgow Control, the customary early changeover on a Saturday afternoon was much appreciated, since it allowed me to get across to Edinburgh to sample the class 37 I’d already allocated to the 1025 Scarborough – Glasgow. I’d also left a note for my late-turn colleague that under no circumstances was 27014 to be put on any passenger train, as it was a total unreliable wreck. (In fact it was so bad that it got to the stage where the Control Daily Log would have entries beginning “Today’s failure of 27014 took place at …” I think it was eventually traced to having some weird fungus growing in the fuel system, so the fuel tanks were removed and thoroughly cleaned. After that it worked OK). You can guess what comes next …
27014 1454 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
27014 vindicated my opinion of it when it shut down entirely in Queen Street tunnel whilst we were being held at signals. The driver couldn’t restart it, so when the signal cleared he simply released the brakes and gravity took over as we rolled silently into Queen Street station as if there was nothing wrong! Meanwhile there were some other attractions to be sampled:
37142 1603 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
This suffered a traction motor flashover 9 miles out of Queen Street. We came to a stand, then after some delay limped forward to Stirling with a pair of motors isolated. There a fitter arrived to ride forward with it. I decided that was enough for me – plenty more fish in the sea
37142 is now preserved at Bodmin.
https://bodmin-heritage-diesels.co.uk/home1/the-fleet/class-37142/index.html
47705 1720 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street
Walk to Glasgow Central
DMU Glasgow Central – Stranraer
37170 2130 Stranraer – Paisley Gilmour Street

Tuesday 12/07/88
Today was the first day of Class 1 revenue earning traffic for Class 90, with 90003 working the 1340 Blackpool North – Euston forward from Preston, with the booked train loco 86413 being conveyed dead for insurance. The run was complicated by the fact that the southbound Trent Valley route was shut due to the derailment of 6A40 Speedlink service in the wee small hours, so the 90 was diverted from Stafford via Bushbury, Bescot and Aston.
90003 (+86413 dead) 1513 Crewe – Euston (route as noted above)
After that it was just a case of finding the most interesting way home:
85032 1814 Euston – Milton Keynes Central
86413 (the loco that had been towed by the 90) 1900 Milton Keynes Central – Stafford
85022 2009 Stafford – Wolverhampton
86411 2047 Wolverhampton – Crewe
Isn’t it strange to realise that class 90s have been in traffic for 33 years already!

Wow, quite a day out. I'd never heard of a 33 going to Clacton berfore. I wonder what the crewing arrangements were on the GE. Did Stratford crews ever sign 33s?

Not sure......but a couple of years later, I went on an ADEX to Diss (then ECS to Norwich) with 33 009 throughout. You'll have to wait until September to read all about that! Willesden, Cricklewood and Stratford drivers used to work cross-London transfer freights to Norwood and Hither Green yards with 25s and 31s....and Norwood and Hither Green crews worked across to Willesden, Cricklewood and Temple Mills yards with 33s (hence the sighting of 33 203 at South Tottenham). Maybe some Stratford drivers did sign Cromptons....or perhaps a Stratford driver was accompanied by a Southern Region traction conductor, bearing in mind that pre-1982 the maximum rostered shift permitted was eight hours. Anyone on here have any further ideas or info?

The day started well as I'm certain both 31's was required, could have gone home after that as not a winner to be found so just spent all day spinning between Picc and Stockport keeping an eye on any Longsight chuck outs.
81007 was a winner for the year so not all was lost.
As a side note the pair of 31's left a lasting impression in more ways than one.
Having spent my hard earned YTS wages on a brand new Adidas coat I was feeling quite dapper as we(my mate and myself)had our heads out from either side of the front drop light windows from Lime St upto Allerton.
As my mate pulled his head in I laughed as his face was covered in Black oil spots, like a mutant version of chicken pots, 'I don't know what your laughing at, he retorted, you look the same and at least my coats not covered in it!
Turns out we both had thought the occasional splattering on the face was the drizzly weather, turns out one of the 31's was chucking out oil!
Much scrubbing of new coat in the MK2 toilet with that rancid old BR soap ensued(surprised I had any skin left after using that).

The 37 was on the Blackpool - Stranraer. I see above that CW2 had it later in the day on its way back to Glasgow. Now allegedly a "Class 97".

40140 1302 York – Darlington
47029 1418 Darlington – York
47465 1547 York – Manchester Victoria
I set off to cover the Fridays Only Blackpool – Stranraer, which was booked for a class 40 forward from Carlisle:
40105 1745 Manchester Victoria – Preston
81003 1846 Preston – Carlisle
Here the rather unlovely 47041 was waiting to take the train forward to Stranraer, so I turned tail and headed back to York:
47409 2212 Carlisle – Newcastle … (to be continued)

Sunday 13/07/80
The nice man in charge of the train trolley caterers at Euston had found me a Sunday turn to work, to boost my income. The diagram was 0855 Euston – Holyhead and 1553 return. However there was also an 0835 Euston – Holyhead running, and that train was diagrammed to get a class 40 forward from Crewe, whereas my diagrammed 0855 from Euston was booked an ETH 47. I accidentally-on-purpose worked the earlier train in the hope of getting a class 40:
86241 0835 Euston – Stafford
47436 (+ 86241 dead) 1102 Stafford – Crewe
After a 20 minute delay waiting loco, a class 40 did indeed appear:
40035 1139 Crewe – Chester
I alighted at Chester to top up my urns and drop back onto the 1155 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead, another class 40 diagram:
40034 1314 Chester – Llanfairfechan
40135 1518 Llanfairfechan – Chester
Whilst waiting at Llanfairfechan a Holyhead – Euston came through non-stop with a 47 on the front. The wind produced by the passage of the train caught hold of my bag of MaxPax lids, scattering them all along the platform!
40135 1518 Llanfairfechan – Chester … then back onto diagrammed work …
47492 1757 Chester – Crewe
86230 1839 Crewe – Euston
A successful day out with the trolley.

Friday 13/07/84
Another Friday 13th! I have a day in which to move myself and my most urgent possessions
from York to Glasgow, prior to taking up my new job. I had arranged to rent a bedsit in Hillhead, a suburb of Glasgow, so I packed in the morning and travelled north early afternoon.
43104 + 43xxx 1301 York – Edinburgh
It’s started! No sooner have I set foot in Scotland than my neat plans are thrown into disarray by the appearance of a required 37 on a Carstairs turn:
37079 1610 Edinburgh – Carstairs
87016 1633 Carstairs – Glasgow Central
This was “The European” from Harwich Parkeston Quay, amended today to start from Preston due to a guards’ strike at Manchester.
A quick trip to the letting agency, then off to Hillhead to find my new bedsit and dump my bags, then straight back out again:
37138 1800 Glasgow Central – Maybole
37172 1945 Maybole – Glasgow Central
I’ve only been in Scotland a few hours, and have already scored 3 NB 37s. This bodes well.
I decided to head across to Edinburgh to cover the southbound overnights from there:
47707 2200 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
The first seven class 26s were fitted with slow speed controls, and were usually confined to MGR trains to and from Cockenzie power station. However in the aftermath of the miners’ strike and in the height of summer, they were sometimes spare:
26005 2315 Edinburgh – Carstairs
This was my first ever run with a 26/0, but it wasn’t to be my last …

Saturday 13/07/85
The two 27s from Glasgow Central deposited me at Edinburgh at some early hour, so I took the first decent way out:
26046 0430 Edinburgh -Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk Grahamston
The aftermath of yesterday’s failures on the West Highland Line was that there were still a couple of NB 37s to be raked in (37020 was required but 37104 was dud):
37020 (+ Ethel 2) 0550 Glasgow Queen Street – Crianlarich
37104 0910 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street
37111 1105 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling (relief to Aberdeen)
47135 1212 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street … and back to work!

Sunday 13th July 1986

The only year for this date..

Last day of my Coasts and Peaks and another 100% Goyle day.

31447 Warrington C to Sheffield, 1E26 10.52 Lime St to Hull
31247 Sheffield to Widnes, 1M19 11.54 Hull to Lime St

"... And every stop is neatly planned..."

31305 Widnes to Sheffield, 1E85 15.52 Lime St to Norwich
31305 Sheffield to Warrington C, Special 19.00 Sheffield to Lime St

305 should have worked the 20.00 to Liverpool, but the 17.08 Hull to Lime St had gone pop at Conisbrough so this ran an hour early. No idea what worked the 20.00.

305 was my only required one of the day and brought to an end a Goyle filled Coasts and Peaks. A few Ned leaps from Warrington to Birchwood coming up in the next few days before another Coasts and Peaks in late August.

47198 Kirkcaldy - Inverkeithing 2J38
47624 Inverkeithing - Waverley 1C77
47519 Waverley - Carstairs 1C77

Turns out we were sharing a journey with CW2 behind 37020 before heading south to get 37071. As I discovered from CW2 earlier in the thread, the two pairs out of Queen St in the evening were getting more locos up on the West Highland following the spate of earlier failures. A few too many Duffs later in the day for my liking.

I should note that if I hadn't been in Scotland I would have been able to catch 37074 on the Paignton - Newcastle, which I never had for haulage. Can't be everywhere!

I’d been signing on the dole in York when a job vacancy card went up for summer workers for Butlins at their various holiday camps around the country. Most of the other applicants from the York office opted to apply for Filey, but – with one eye on the cranking possibilities – I opted for Heads of Ayr in Scotland. Thus, safely packed up and with my travel warrant in hand I headed to Scotland on a 7 week contract:
46043 1239 York – Newcastle
DMU Newcastle – Carlisle
87014 1644 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
DMU Glasgow Central – Ayr

Saturday 14/07/79
Having been disappointed by the appearance of a 47 at Carlisle to work the Fridays Only Euston – Stranraer, I had come across with a 47 to Newcastle, and waited. Then I did some more waiting. Then a bit more. Trains from Scotland came in behind a succession of class 47s and absolutely wedged, this being the Glasgow Fairs Holiday Fortnight. Eventually, an 0005 Glasgow Queen Street – Scarborough relief rolled in with required 40124. This too was completely wedged, so with 4 other 40 bashers I took refuge in a vacant guard’s compartment for the run to York.
At York the train gained two things. The first was a replacement loco in the form of 40007. The second was a team of Travelling Ticket Inspectors who were en route to Scarborough to man the barriers there for the day. Coincidentally I decided I’d had enough of being wedged into a guard’s van chair, so I felt the sudden pressing need to alight at York for an early breakfast, and followed on to Scarborough in a DMU.
40124 0445 Newcastle – York
DMU York – Scarborough
There was an excellent escape to be had at Scarborough, with another required 40, 40187 on the 0910 Scarborough – Llandudno
40187 0910 Scarborough – Leeds
All was going well until Weaverthorpe, where the loco failed and was unable to take power. Eventually we got going again, but with no field weakening, so speeds were limited. We tottered on to York where we expected the loco to be replaced, but the cupboard was bare, so we just had to totter on to Leeds. At Holgate Junction we passed 37068 which was in the process of incinerating itself on the Wellingborough – Scarborough, so goodness only knows what was going to rescue that.
We reached Leeds 55 minutes down, where the unlovely 47549 was waiting to take over. It’s a nice thought, but no thanks. I’ve got a better idea:
40003 1151 Leeds – York (required)
Time for lunch, and then:
40099 1353 York – Manchester Victoria (required). Heavy handed thrash merchant driver.
40154 1605 Manchester Victoria - Huddersfield
40014 1729 Huddersfield – York
That’s my idea of a good Summer Saturday.

Tuesday 14/07/81
I had to go from my flat in Harringay across to Paddington to post a letter in the TPO to Devon. On my way I passed Finsbury Park, where there were about 7 ETH 47s lurking and a lonely looking 40057. I smiled to myself, and thought “I guess the 40 will be on 1S60 tonight then”. It’s obvious when you think of it, a 12 coach train diagrammed for a 47/4, and you’ve got a shed full of the damn things. Which loco do you think they turned out when I passed through Kings Cross on my way home?
40057 2000 Kings Cross – Newcastle. On time throughout.

Saturday 14/07/84
So it’s my first full day in Scotland since being appointed to my new job. I’ve dumped my luggage in a bedsit, and immediately come out bashing, scoring 26005 (my first ever run with a 26/0) on the portion to Carstairs. This is what followed:
85039 0005 Carstairs – Carlisle
86221 0316 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
Then across to Queen Street as there is an additional to Scarborough to cover:
37045 0705 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk High
At Edinburgh somebody said that the ECS to Dundee for the 0945 Dundee – Kings Cross had been worked by a pair of class 20s. That was one train I must cover, risking a dodgy dead connection at Dundee to do it all the way:
27012 0818 Edinburgh – Dundee
20208 + 20204 0945 Dundee – Edinburgh
There were plenty of fun and games with this train. 27037 had failed on the 0928 Dundee – Edinburgh, being unable to get enough power on the curving climb out of Burntisland station. After it was declared a failure, our train was waiting in the section behind, so we were cautioned on to the rear. The passengers off the failed train were told to detrain and join ours, which they did. Once coupled up, and with a fair bit of thrashing and overloading, the 20s pushed the failed train into Inverkeithing loop, reversed back out, then continued on their way, calling all stations to Edinburgh vice the failure. You can imagine that failed 27 + 4 VB coaches + 2 class 20s + 9 AB coaches (with a buffet) was quite a sight. All things being equal, an hour late into Edinburgh was quite a good result. Incidentally the Dundee – Edinburgh was a full first class rake, declassified, with one Air-Con open coach and the rest all compartments apart from the buffet car.
The 20s came off at Edinburgh, as booked. Still, there was more to be done.
20208 + 20204 14-07-84 Burntisland.jpg
20208 + 20204 on the 0945 Dundee – Edinburgh couple to the rear of the failed 0928 Dundee – Edinburgh at Burntisland. 14/07/84.
47283 1310 Edinburgh – Carstairs (required)
47098 1435 Carstairs – Edinburgh
These were just fill-in moves prior to the main event:
37125 1610 Edinburgh – Carstairs
On this journey I sat with a class 37 basher who had made the long journey up from East Anglia specifically to have 37125, as it was one of his last dozen or so for haulage. He was (understandably) feeling very pleased with himself. One question he had was: “I’ve heard some of the slow-speed 26s have been working on passenger. Is that right? Are there any about today?” “Well, only the pair we are going to Carstairs for right now. You see, you think this 37 is the purpose of your journey, but it is actually just a positioning move to pick up the 26s!”
26004 + 26003 1725 Carstairs – Edinburgh
With that I called it a day, and headed back to York to try to explain to my wife how my first hours in Scotland had been passed …
43113 + 43054 1835 Edinburgh - York

Sunday 14/07/85
37071 1306 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Dumfries (relief to Euston)
47117 (+87030 dead) 1615 Carlisle – MP 39.25 (Beattock)
87030 17xx MP 39.25 (Beattock) – Glasgow Central
The OLE was late being switched on after engineering works overnight, so we had a class 47 drag from Carlisle to Beattock on the return journey.

Nothing for me from yesterday, but on Friday 14th July 1978 I had a rather circuitous journey home from the office after discovering that required for haulage 33 021 was on the 17 00 Waterloo-Exeter.

Could I please ask the indulgence of the members, moderators and admins to allow me to retro-post details of a day trip to Cornwall on Sunday 11th July 1976, which I forgot to post three days ago due to my hopelessly inadequate filing system for my various notebooks, which I have not yet had the time to digitise?

We had travelled from Petersfield to Reading via Guildford the previous evening, then took the Night Riviera (in the seats) to Penzance for breakfast, before working our way home on day trains. Although we didn't have as much 'Western' haulage as we would have liked, it was nice to arrive in Penzance behind 'Consort'.

A day bashing 87s but with some quite long festers. My book has the comment "tomorrow best be better", whether that was referring to too many cans or no 40s has been lost to memory...

87028 WBQ to Crewe, 1A18 06.30 Carlisle to Euston
87029 Crewe to Preston, 1P18 08.35 Euston to Blackpool
87003 Preston to Crewe, 1V90 10.45 Glasgow to Plymouth
33032 Stock shunt for 16.06 Crewe to Cardiff

Ned leaps (3.25 miles), four in the morning/early afternoon then one in the evening. I think my Warrington savercard was not valid in the evening peak.

31451 (required) Warrington C to Birchwood, 1E85 10.45 Lime St to Yarmouth
31185 Birchwood to Warrington C, 1M32 10.22 Sheffield to Lime St
31442 Warrington C to Birchwood, 1E43 12.45 Lime St to Sheffield (had this as 251 on the Nuneaton to Leicester leap)
31447 Birchwood to Warrington C, 1M31 08.15 Yarmouth to Lime St

A gap

31419 Birchwood to Warrington C, 1M61 19.22 Sheffield to Lime St

I was on a trip to Manchester from York, shifting some belongings to my new bedsit prior to starting summer work in the station buffet.
47196 1354 York – Manchester Victoria
40171 1851 Manchester Victoria – York
This was the 1805 Liverpool – Newcastle, and at Manchester it was announced as 20 minutes late departing Liverpool. Leaving Manchester Victoria we were only 10 minutes late, and despite two PSRs to 20 mph we were only 1 minute late at Huddersfield, then one early into Leeds, and 3 early into York. It was a certain celebrity York driver at the helm. He commented “It’s a good one, this” as he alighted from the loco at York.

Tuesday 15/07/80
A visit to the (future) in-laws at Abergavenny, accompanied by my (future) wife:
50026 1000 Paddington – Worcester Shrub Hill
Walk Worcester Shrub Hill – Worcester Foregate Street
DMU Worcester Foregate Street – Hereford
31205 1320 Hereford – Abergavenny

Monday 15/07/85
There is a return ADEX from Blackpool North to Airdrie, which has 37245 allocated to it over Shap and Beattock to Shields Junction, where 37146 is allocated to be attached so the locos can run top-and-tail along the (then) branch to Airdrie. With a friend and fellow crank, we set off to intercept the train and its required 37s, starting with a required 26:
26043 1545 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Dumfries
37245 2043 Carlisle – Shields Jn via Beattock, Polmadie, Larkfield Jn
37146 (+ 37245 on rear) 2233 Shields Jn – Airdrie via High St Jn
Arriving at Airdrie after the passenger service had closed down for the night was not a position of strength, so we persuaded the traincrew to let us remain on the ECS for the short journey back to Coatbridge Sunnyside
37245 (+ 37146 on rear) 2330 Airdrie – Coatbridge Sunnyside (ECS)
Walk Coatbridge Sunnyside – Coatbridge Central
(Tuesday 16/07/85)
After that successful evening, it was another overnight and straight back to work:
47426 0009 Coatbridge Central – Mossend
86253 0030 Mossend – Carlisle
81011 0348 Carlisle – Glasgow Central

Tuesday 15/07/86
27053 1603 Glasgow Queen Street – Arbroath
27053 1850 Arbroath – Dundee
47702 2024 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street

Wednesday 15/07/87
37430 1719 Crewe – Hereford
37431 1943 Hereford – Crewe

Monday 15/07/91
I don’t usually include my commuting / work moves, but this day was quite unusual:
43017 + 43169 0601 Reading – Paddington
86208 0725 Liverpool Street – Manningtree
(Lift with my boss from Manningtree station to Harwich offices, to attend a meeting).
312 721 Harwich Parkeston Quay – Manningtree
86238 1755 Manningtree – Liverpool Street (This was the 1705 ex Norwich calling additionally at Manningtree vice the cancelled 1715 ex Ipswich).
I got myself across to Paddington to go home to Reading, to find the place in a fine state of turmoil.
1855 Reading stopper departed at 1934
1830 arrival ex Oxford rolled in at 1933, with 47807 failed on the front, being pushed by 47801 on the rear
1905 to Reading departed 1925 with 47703
1915 to Reading cancelled
1920 to Oxford had no loco at 1935
I gave up and caught an HST running 21 minutes late:
43135 + 43198 1915 Paddington – Reading
