That was a sobering thing to read @CW2 thanks for sharing that.

Edit - Not much to add to this thread apart from looking through my remaining books I had a cab ride in 25067 from Ropley to Alresford on the Mid Hants on an ecs thirty years ago yesterday.
I’d been there for a few months by then volunteering and living in at first a tent and then as it got colder a portakabin called the Tea Junction at Ropley, doing various jobs around the place.
Most of the rest of the week was spent in an SR brake van next a lowmac with a tractor and flail on it as we pottered up and down the line flailing hedgerows whilst being pulled very slowly by 08288.
I’ve some (very slow) mileage off that 08 over the years!

View attachment 103519

I know we keep saying things like this, but how can this be thirty years ago?
One of those rare examples where flailing from a train was a necessary activity!

I am rather envious! I never had a 76 for haulage - or a 13 for that matter!
Meanwhile ...

Friday 07/10/77
My idea of a good Friday Night Out may differ slightly from some other people’s:
40083 2150 York – Stockport, via OA&GB Jn, Denton Jn
Cab ride from Leeds
(Saturday 08/10/77)
40083 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn
Cab ride to Leeds
(The dates for the above two entries may be +/- a week).

Wednesday 07/10/81
85026 2300 WN101 Signal – Crewe
This was a return FOOTEX from Northumberland Park to Manchester Piccadilly. I required the Roarer, so after finishing my late shift in Willesden PSB I strolled out of the back door and straight into this as it was changing locos on the City Goods Line. The stop at Crewe was middle road too, so I had to use my skills in platform-edge scrambling to alight.

Saturday 07/10/00
47807 0450 Reading – Birmingham New Street
86214 0655 Birmingham New Street – Preston
34027 0918 Preston – Glasgow Central via Shap, Beattock
87034 1700 Glasgow Central – Carlisle
90039 1949 Carlisle – Wolverhampton
The above two services were severely delayed by the derailment of 4M34 EWS service ex Mossend, and consequent track damage. Single Line Working was in place. 90039’s train was terminated at Wolverhampton due to late running, as an engineering possession prevented us from running through to International.
Bus Wolverhampton – International
Car International – Reading

I wish I had been on that tour, but unfortunately it was two days before I joined BR and had money in my pocket (and priv travel too of course !).
But I did manage one 76 on the Easter Tommy Railtour of April 1981.

Midland Jubilee railtour

This ran Euston-Paddington via Chester, in conjunction with another charter running in the opposite direction (Paddington-Euston). Both trains used the same pool of locos for haulage. I joined the train at Birmingham.

87007 Birmingham-Crewe
47351 Crewe-Chester
A4 4498 Chester-Shrewsbury(Class 25 assisting Gresford-Wrexham)

It was a wet day and 4498, down to walking pace on Gresford Bank, started to slip and eventually came to a standstill. It was unable to restart, so a Class 25 was dispatched from Wrexham to assist. The 25 passed us on the down line and crossed to the up, somewhere in our rear. It then coupled onto the back of our train and gave the A4 a much needed push. This combination carried on to Wrexham where the 25 was removed, and 4498 carried on to Shrewsbury. I failed to record the identity of the Class 25 unfortunately.

King 6000 Shrewsbury-Craven Arms
Princess 6201 Craven Arms-Hereford
MN 35028 Hereford-Newport

Experienced quite an array of 8P steam haulage that day, which I have never managed to repeat. After that it was a pair of Hoovers to London.

50004+50005 Newport-Paddington
Tube Paddington-Euston
86207 20:40 Euston- B’ham Int (Euston-Wolverhampton service)

Saturday 8th October 1983

My first run over the new, recently completed Selby Diversion line (Temple Hirst Junction-Colton Junction).

The S&C was closed this Sunday, so the 1515 Glasgow – Nottingham was diverted from Carlisle via Newcastle and York to Leeds. It would have been nice to have done it all the way from Glasgow instead of just York to Leeds:
40084 1906 Leeds – York
45032 20xx York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Selby
47524 2133 Selby - York

Thursday 08/10/81
Having arrived at Crewe in ignominious middle-road scramble fashion in the wee small hours of the morning, I festered until a suitable exit presented itself, in the form of a class 82 on the Glasgow – Bristol overnight:
82008 0452 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
86261 0625 Birmingham New Street – Lancaster
87030 1023 Lancaster – Preston
87009 1057 Preston – Crewe
This train was delayed 75 minutes at Preston due to a hot box on the Mk3 buffet car, which had to be detached.

(Sunday 07/10/84)
47455 2352 York – Edinburgh
Monday 08/10/84
37264 0430 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk Grahamston
Then after working the early shift in Glasgow Control, I headed for Berwick upon Tweed, in the knowledge that 37202 was allocated to the 1718 Newcastle – Edinburgh:
47701 1600 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
43068 + 43059 1635 Edinburgh – Berwick upon Tweed, 40’ late.
There I alighted to claim my prize …
47411 1833 Berwick upon Tweed – Edinburgh
47707 2100 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
It just goes to show that not all gen is good gen, Terms and Conditions apply, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, etc.

Thursday 08/10/92
The Army were having a sort of “closed” “Open Day” for families and friends at Kineton, where there is a pretty substantial military railway. A friend / work colleague then owned an old NAAFI canteen wagon, and was invited to attend, along with his family, and I tagged along as an “invited” guest. Progress from his home in Potters Bar around the M25 and down the M40 in this somewhat ancient vehicle was not swift, and I was stuck in the back as there wasn’t any room for me in the front, but eventually we did reach Kineton, and put the vehicle on display, before going out to enjoy the incongruous sight of Deltic 55015 running shuttle trips around the circuit, sharing duties with one of the Army shunters, 423:
55015 1220 Burton Dassett – Heap Halt
55015 1250 Heap Halt – Burton Dassett
423 1305 Burton Dassett – Heap Halt
423 1325 Heap Halt – Burton Dassett
Then we went for a slightly longer run around a different circuit:
55015 1420 Burton Dassett – Burton Dassett via Edge Hill (no, not the one on Merseyside, the one in Warwickshire which was the site of a famous battle in 1642, or nearly quarter to five).
After all this fun and games, I got a lift to Leamington Spa to escape home:
47813 1644 Leamington Spa – Reading

Back to Brum after a weekend at home:

47527 Newcastle - Sheffield 1V59
47501 Sheffield - New St 1V59

I suppose replacing the ETH Duff with a different ETH Duff counts as variety.

If I hadn't gone away for the weekend I could have had this:

Can't win them all.

150 123 0738 Derby – Nottingham
The purpose of these desperate unit moves? Well, one of the Nottingham – Blackpool sprinter diagrams had temporarily been turned over to loco + stock on a short-term basis, Mondays to Fridays Only, so I had to cover it:
37431 0815 Nottingham – Blackpool North via Toton, Sheffield (run round), Hazel Grove, Windsor Link. Lots of new class 37 track there for me.
Job done! After that, it was just a case of heading back south once more, and back to work:

There's a very good chance I was standing on the platform at Newcastle watching you arrive. And then being bowled out when the 40 didn't work back.

Haulage and sight wise a blank evening, looks like the CD ETH locos had been found heading towards winter.

I can’t remember how I ended up in Leeds, (possibly staying overnight with friends) but that’s where the day started:
45148 1035 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
45049 1100 Wakefield Westgate – Leeds
Then an unexpected bonus:
40067 1205 Leeds – Darlington
43073 + 43098 1334 Darlington – York
… and now for an afternoon bash on the Kings Cross stoppers, hoping for a Deltic or two:
47405 1413 York – Doncaster
47462 1641 Doncaster – York
… so that was a disappointment. However, another class 40 turned up on the Liverpool – Newcastle circuit:
40077 1740 York – Darlington
47430 1845 Darlington – York
46032 1940 York – Darlington
47542 2125 Darlington – Doncaster
47524 2320 Doncaster – York
So two 40s, an HST, and hour after hour of Sulzers …

Friday 10/10/80
86010 2050 Euston – Crewe
EMU Crewe – Manchester
I stayed with a friend overnight, as we were going to cover a charter to Oxford the following morning …

Sunday 10/10/82
After staying with my friends in Bishops Stortford overnight, we came out for a bash on the Cambridge line, hoping for some 37s:
37118 1015 Bishops Stortford – Cambridge
47158 1220 Cambridge – Bishops Stortford
37086 1315 Bishops Stortford – Cambridge
37086 1420 Cambridge – Bishops Stortford
37047 1515 Bishops Stortford – Cambridge
37021 1620 Cambridge – Liverpool Street
86255 1825 Euston – Stockport via Euston Down Departure Line, Crewe
DMU 2141 Stockport – Stalybridge
45118 2215 Stalybridge – York
Both 37118 and 37021 were required. I had a couple of further runs with 37021 when it transferred to Inverness, but this was my only run with 37118.

Wednesday 10/10/84
37012 1638 Glasgow Queen Street – Dundee
37237 banker Queen Street – Cowlairs
37012 1850 Dundee – Glasgow Queen Street
37012 was a common boilered Eastfield loco, but the banker 37237 was very much required.

Thursday 10/10/86
37099 0820 Glasgow Queen Street – Crianlarich
If a boilered 37 should escape from England into the clutches of Scotland, it would often end up being used on the West Highland Line for a while (pre-RETB signalling).
37404 1035 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street
47617 1345 Glasgow Central – Kilmarnock
26027 1430 Kilmarnock – Glasgow Central
37036 1545 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Dumfries
87031 1943 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
37036 was one of those relatively few 37s which were vacuum only, and boilered. Other examples included 37017 and 37090. So they were no use on the air-braked freights, and so either ended up on vacuum braked ballast trains, parcels or passenger work.

Sunday 10/10/93 – steam excursions in connection with an Eastleigh Rail Day (?)
165 119 Reading – Basingstoke
1891 + 3457 Basingstoke – Eastleigh
828 + 70000 1700 Eastleigh – Salisbury via Chandlers Ford
828 + 70000 1803 Salisbury – Eastleigh via Chandlers Ford
70000 2030 Eastleigh – Waterloo
43191 + 43016 2245 Paddington – Reading

Oh, definitely EMUs, of the old school variety, as explained by AJM580.
I recall that at the time there was a virtual prohibition on running steam over third rail in daylight, for fear of trespass incidents, hence the Chandlers Ford routeing of the Salisbury specials, and the fact the Waterloo special had to wait until after unset.
