IMO it was in the Monster category.A big Gateshead 37 that I never had. Mind, 1979 was before my time.

Had it on the Shapeshifter tour - Sept 1998 in a pair with 37238. Hellfire run on the GWML Paddington to SwindonA big Gateshead 37 that I never had. Mind, 1979 was before my time.
Slightly ridiculously, I was standing on B'ham International one evening in 1987 when it rolled in on the Paddington service. Even as a 47 man that was too outrageous not to have a trip on!A big Gateshead 37 that I never had. Mind, 1979 was before my time.
Travelled to Edinburgh on 10th June 1978, on a Merrymaker excursion from Nottingham hauled by 45038 out and back. Interestingly I observed two of the above locos that day. Deltic 55021 arrived at Waverley just before I departed to Haymarket, with 27202+27208 on the 14 :30 Edinburgh-Glasgow QS, and 45006 was noted on York depot when returning that evening.Saturday 10th June 1978

47241 York-Sheffield (1014 Scarborough-Birmingham NS)

45006 Sheffield-York (0725 Plymouth-Edinburgh)
A couple of weeks earlier I had seen 47 277 ex-works in Crewe Works yard from a passing Euston-Holyhead train. Apart from the four early withdrawals, it was my last 47 for sight and at that point I decided to cease spotting; thereafter only recording haulage and loco-hauled coaching stock. One of the few occasions I actually went out for a Duff. 47277 was then allocated to Knottingley and would normally only be found on MGR traffic, rarely finding passenger work. IIRC 47277 had recently spent some time in Crewe Works and was perhaps making its way back to its home depot.
The Knottingley Class 47s were not only elusive on passenger trains they were difficult to see if you didn’t live close to the Yorkshire coalfields and power stations. They were notable for there filthy condition caused by close contact with coal dust. They even made Gateshead locos look pristine. When I had 47277 for haulage I was somewhat disappointed by its condition. I hadn’t realised that it had been recently outshopped from Crewe.A couple of weeks earlier I had seen 47 277 ex-works in Crewe Works yard from a passing Euston-Holyhead train. Knottingley depot lost its class 47 allocation in August 1979 when the 56s took over their MGR duties. The 47s went initially to Healey Mills (where they were still ridiculously rare on passenger) but from May 1980 they started to be allocated elsewhere (mostly Tinsley and Thornaby) where they were *slightly* more accessible (but not a lot!). 47277 was still a HM locomotive when you had it in 1981; it went to Tinsley in 1984 and then quickly to Stratford, where like most of SF's no-heat 47s it continued to be a serious rarity. One of the few occasions I actually went out for a Duff. 47277 was then allocated to Knottingley and would normally only be found on MGR traffic, rarely finding passenger work. Although I didn’t normally chase 47s, I would take them if they passed my way. The Knottingley 47/3s were particularly rare. In fact of the first ten, 47301 to 47310 I only managed to get 47310 for haulage. As mentioned before I have no haulage records pre-1983, but I do have a definite memory of travelling behind a KY 47 in August 1977; On an East Midlands Railrover, after visiting Wath Depot we cycled to Mexborough for what I believe was the 2125 Sheffield-York, loco-hauled with 47310 which we took to Doncaster (where we spent the night on the station!).
(Many, many years later I had the pleasure of travelling behind former KY 47376 - on the GWSR on 29/07/22!)
From memory there was a Class 40 basher who was a Train Guard from Leeds. He knew about this annual WMC trip and made efforts behind the scene to ensure the 1979 excursion would be allocated as a Class 40. I believe 40106 just happened to be on hand at Holbeck to work the service. Come 1980 and from the Class 40 bashers point of view a rare NB Healey Mills loco was expected. However I believe the organisers of the train asked if the big green engine could work their train again. Efforts were then made to get 40106 across the Pennines to be in a position to work the service.Did Heckmondwike WMC request 40106 every year!!
