Had email from Bristol airport today regarding closure of long term parking from 1st November for 18 months. The second multi-storey car park with a new bus and coach terminal on the roof is going to be built. (The car parking is lower than the terminal so rooftop bus terminal will provide level route, unlike the current zig zag slopes or steps from car park).

Lots of other parking changes and relocations of pick up areas etc in interim

All part of expansion from old limit of 10m passengers per year, to new limit of 12m which campaigners tried to block, but Court rejected their objections in May

Bristol airport is a bit seasonal, latest CAA figures for July show 1,081,278 passengers which is obviously more than one twelfth of 12m limit. If usage was constant for all other 11 months would be 29.7% over its old 10m limit (would also be 8% over 12m capacity limit)

In July was 8th busiest UK airport (after Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Stansted, Luton, Edinburgh, Birmingham), and only one of biggest 8 (over 1m passengers per month) without a rail or transit or tram link.

They need to get something sorted if they want to grow much more. It's in the middle of nowhere and the buses will get less and less useful as passenger numbers increase.

They should have developed Filton as Bristol Airport, it is in a much better location. It wasn’t as high up to avoid the weather problems, had a much longer runway and if it was open now is a few minutes off of the motorway on a dual carriageway and has a train line running alongside.

Agreed. I’ve said this before on at least two other threads.

Back to the present day, how about building a new “Bristol Airport Parkway” station on the existing line near the village of Long Ashton. You can then have frequent shuttle buses or a cable hauled people mover serving the airport from there.

More public transport to Bristol won't take off in huge numbers because of the fact it is a rip off. The bus fares are extortionate in comparison to other airports and any 'cable hauled people mover' I would put money on the fact that the fees to use it would be in excess of those charged by Lutons DART. Bristol Airport wants people to drive, they don't want people on public transport.

Yes, keep coming out with half baked ideas, and expensive fare for last mile to airport. Now promoting a service from Worle station (which is miles from airport near M5 junction 15), service A3

If they were serious about public transport would have built a rail spur from near Flax Bourton (although topography might require some heavy engineering), instead I am convinced airport wants people to pay nearer £100 per week for leaving car at the airport because brings in millions of pounds.

They could become a lot more bus friendly even without having a rail link. Things such as a half decent bus station (even the new proposed bus station looks like it's going to be a poor canopy which protects people from almost no weathers), Not demanding such high access fees for local buses. After all, that is why fares sky rocket. They contract their own buses for one of two reasons, I can't work out which it is. Either it is because if they contract the buses on their frequency and their fares, it is unlikely to have any competition because why is someone going to compete against the Airports own bus when clearly you aren't going to be on an even playing field. The second reason for them funding buses is that basically no one can make the routes viable on the stupidly high access/departure rates set by the Airport (I did try to email them once to get the rate but they are surprisingly secretive over the rate. They demand far too much detail for what should be a very basic bit of information to share).

The constant promotion of Trainline on their website at every mention of train links. Advertising the most passenger unfriendly company.

Shocking airport when it comes to public transport.

The fares on the A3 Airport Flyer from Weston are reasonable at £7 return. This isn’t much more expensive than what Bristol Airport charge to park for 10 minutes and this is a service contracted to First by Bristol Airport.

The A1 Airport Flyer is more expensive at £15 return, but still far cheaper than what you would pay to park and includes the bus to get to the City Centre too! The A1 is also very busy too and the A3 can also get busy.
