Going to football at Burnleys Turf Moor ground in Saturday with 2 kids & have a train back to London at 17:14 (via Preston) that's around 20-25 mins after game finishes.

Does anyone know if it's doable to get there with kids in that time?

Will be walking as getting taxis after football games is a nightmare.

Cheers.

It's about a kilometre, possibly a bit more. If I were doing it myself, I'd say no bother, but with kids, I suggest finding a taxi firm and booking one at 5 - 5.15 from a local point such as the bus station which you should be able to get to from the ground in the required time.

A local should be able to give you a better idea of walking time.

Yes, it's fine. I've done it once as part of a big away following and still made it. I'd say it's a 15minute walk. Maybe check football ground guide website though? Depending on your teams' following, you may not physically be able to board the first train that comes. BTP had a queueing system in place when I was there.

Looking at Street View on Manchester Rd reminded me that I am always mystified why the Google SV people blot out direction signs (where they can be bothered). I can understand blotting out adverts (not all of which they do anyway).

Anyone know why this curious and annoying policy is pursued?

BTW, I am not a local, but I note one has to hasten across some very intimidating roundabouts an the way from Turf Moor to Manchester Rd.

I'm not sure it's intentional but more likely "collateral damage" in their automated attempts to blur out vehicle number plates...

It would make sense for their algorithms to err on the side of caution - it's better that more road signs are mistakenly identified as number plates than vice versa.

If one holds an advance ticket and is denied boarding by BTP after a football match, presumably travel would be allowed on later trains?

according to google it's 20 mins walk, and what you don't see so well is that it is uphill. The away end at Turf Moor is in the right place for you (the west end) and I am fairly sure you would exit onto Harry Potts Way, but I have seen after some matches the police keep the fans separated along there meaning you may not go the most direct way though I think you will be OK.

I would say your best bet is to leave a few mins before the end to be sure of timings and not to get delayed in the crowds - a lot of the local support also will be walking back to the town along the same road

Don't leave before the end, its one of the (many) things wrong with modern football...

If you are concerned about BTP not letting you on the train, just zip up your jacket and take off your scarf etc. Though I am sure that with two children you will be fine

Cheers all.

Got a quick turnaround at Preston for the Virgin service back to Euston so hoping to avoid any mishaps.

Is the train from Manc Rd to Preston a 4 car local service jobby?

If you are following the instructions of an authorised person (which would include BTP officers carrying out their duties in accordance of the wishes of the relevant railway companies), you are valid yes.

As said, usually a 2/3 car 158, however I have seen them put extra units (or even trains) on before for football services on this line. I think you will be ok anyway as with supporting QPR there should be a split of your supporters going East and West out of Burnley in order to get the cheaper tickets on both London routes.

I can't imagine QPR bringing a massive away following (they had the same trip last year, it's a nightmare to get to compared to other Premiership grounds, many many fans hate Turf Moor etc) so crowds shouldn't be a massive concern.

Leaving about 20 minutes is cutting it very fine though. Best case scenario the match would end at 16:50 but likely to end closer to 17:00 so to be on the safe side I'd leave 5-10 minutes early and make it a brisk walk. I've done that journey in the past and it's not the easiest, plus the station is only a tiny one which I imagine would get packed after the match.

We've sold 2,500 tickets according to box office.

Not sure how that compares to other followings.

My mistake, that sounds pretty decent then. I'm used to following a Championship side that struggles to break 500 for most games!

2,500 could be interesting if lots of them catch the train. I'd definitely want to leave a little early if my train was as early as 17:14. When I went to Burnley I booked a train back to Preston just after 6 and with a bit of waiting at the ground after made it back to a quieter platform.

2,500 isn't a bad number. The worry for an away fan is whether the police feel the need to keep the away fans in their seats for 20 minutes whilst the home fans clear off. I've seen in done at Leeds v Brighton and a couple of others occasionally.

Yea very true. Had that a few times. Notably every time at Millwall where they keep you for 45 mins without fail. Ridiculous. Millwall are pussy cats these days.

I am also going to this game as a QPR Supporter and wondered the same thing. I'm getting a lift up to the game but then need to make my way to Preston. I was hoping to catch the 5.14 train

Did you manage to make the train. I got there just in time as it was late but platform was very busy.

Yes made train that was late incoming, Preston - Euston train was due to leave 4 mins before we actually got in but the BTP got it held due to rowdy QPR fans so that was a result or it'd been a train getting back an hour and a half later.
