Bus Info Ticket

I have been told that in the south coast area (possibly Brighton) that you can ask the bus driver for an “info ticket”. This would give details of the bus number, route, driver and time. The details can then be used if you have a complaint or positive feedback.

Does anyone know if this is a known thing that can be requested and is it national or just certain bus companies?

I'm sure this is something that all Ticketer machines can do

Brighton & Hove and Metrobus both do them. It was something introduced on their machines almost thirty years ago in the late 1990s on Brighton & Hove and then rolled out to Metrobus in the early 2010s after they started merging. The idea was that passengers who had any issue with the vehicle or driver could request one and the policy is that drivers have to issue them. Unfortunately these days half the drivers have no idea what they are. It has been forgotten about in the last ten years. Brighton & Hove and Metrobus both still have the ability to issue them on the current Ticketer machines and you can still ask for one but be prepared for the driver to have no clue or to spend ages looking for it on their machine. It is basically a zero fare ticket that says "Info Ticket" and has the driver number and fleet number and all the regular information on a normal ticket. As far as i know these are the only companies that do that. I think it was something that Roger French introduced when he was the MD years ago.

Had such a ticket been available it would have been useful when I had to make a complaint about a bus driver in Birmingham who refused to accept my West Yorkshire issued ENCTS card. The amount of information I had to supply about the bus was extensive, luckily I took a picture of the bus. On the other hand, the driver was so confrontational I don’t think he would have issued the ticket had I dared to ask!

My local Stagecoach subsidiary's tickets have all that info on as standard, as seen in the photo below;

However if you're using tap-on tap-off, or already hold a valid ticket from a different service, or are using a concessionary pass/season ticket, it won't have the details of the current service

Birmingham. When you scan it, it should say concessionary accepted or words to that effect? So not sure how it came to that. Which route was this on?

I don’t think you can get an info ticket. Just the fleet number and note the time would have done.

Can, but it is something the operator has to choose to activate & set-up. We have a couple of different versions depending on the incident to give the right information, so as well as a simple contact details we principally also have one for accidents but I think there are a couple of others different set-ups.

It was a service from Harbourne into central Birmingham. My West Yorkshire ENCTS card is a companion card allowing someone to travel with me in Wedt Yorkshire. However, quite a few bus companies around the country reject the card incorrectly. Most bus companies it works fine.

Not many local authorities issue Companion cards, and where they do it would only apply in the area of the issuing authority only, i.e. the companion part is not valid outside West Yorkshire. For this reason the card may be encoded differently to other ENCTS cards and some areas might not have their ticket machines set up correctly to read them.

Stagecoach East Midlands issue tickets for journeys with concessionary passes. I don’t know why this is the case when other Stagecoach areas, and most other bus companies don’t do this. It’s very confusing in some parts of Derbyshire where both Stagecoach East Midlands and Stagecoach Yorkshire run services. You have to remember to take a ticket on routes operated from the Mansfield depot and I presume Worksop depot.

Yes, I know a companion is only valid in West Yorkshire. I have been in touch with a couple of bus companies over the issue and they recognise their systems need updating. One tried to do it, but it still failed! It’s frustrating that most bus companies can cope but some can’t. The attitude of some drivers when the pass fails on the reader can leave much to be desired! It’s not my fault their system can’t cope but I know they won’t appreciate that.

Mind you,you have to smile at times. I am entitled to a companion in West Yorkshire as I am visually impaired. When I put my pass on the reader the ticket machine must ask the driver to ask me if a companion is travelling with me. Most say “1 or 2” or similar. Some say nothing and the people with me tell me the driver sticks up 1 or 2 fingers - something I won’t see!

Stagecoach Yorkshire, Manchester, Cheshire/Merseyside don't issue tickets for concession cards

Concession pass holders in Lancashire did (and may still do) get issued with a ticket on most, if not all, bus operators, as far as I can tell.

Someone said it's a Lancashire County Council requirement.
