Can anyone advise where to get tickets for the sleeper online or via a phone? i've got several prices ranging from 24 to 102 quid for this!

Scotrail. None of the other booking websites (that I know of) can handle the paid reservations necessary to book into a sleeper.

Book directly on their website (www.scotrail.co.uk) or call Scotrail Telesales on 01752 675670 (that's the geographic number, cheaper in most cases than the 08 number they advertise).

The cheapest bed for your trip is likely to be one of the limited number of Bargain Berths, available in a separate booking engine from the main ticketing part of the Scotrail site. Just look for Bargain Berths under Caledonian Sleeper. These cheap tickets usually open out another week in advance every Friday morning.

Information is avalible here: Scotrail

If you buy a normal saver/open single/return for example then you just need to add on the cost of the cuppliment £54 for sole use of a birth and £38 the share (prices to Inverness)

Bargin births are sometimes avalible from £29 I think through Scotrail.

Bargain Berths are released in limited numbers (usually just 2 or 4 in each fare "bucket") at £19, £29, £39 and £49 consecutively. You need to move fast to get a Bargain Berth to Westerton because a) the Fort William train is only a couple of cars long; b) the train is very popular all year round; and c) Westerton is a well known loophole for Glasgow-bound passengers who've missed out on bargain berths on the Glasgow sleeper.

Enjoy the journey! Although you'll be getting off just before the really scenic bit!

Slight problem: lots of other bashers may be planning the same move!

Even when FSR know the trains will be busy they may release a small number of bargain berths. For example myself and 'Met Driver' got some on a Bank Holiday Monday on the penultimate weekend of Class 37 haulage, by booking on the morning they went on sale, in fact I booked them within minutes as I was checking constantly. Only 2 were available (at £19 each) and we got them both. In the event the train was absolutely wedged with standees even in the guards luggage area!

Bargain berths: http://www.travelpass.buytickets.scotrail.co.uk/BargainBerths/

Other tickets: http://www.buytickets.scotrail.co.uk

Bear in mind when booking online, that the bed icon indicates a berth inclusive fare, the reclining seat icon represents a seat.

Photo of the sleeper at Oban (when diverted): http://yorkie.fotopic.net/p26070441.html (you'll be able to get a better photo than this, this was before I got an SLR) don't ask me where I took the photo from, I just followed everyone else! ;)

That's because there's only compulsory reservations for anyone going seated south of Edinburgh or in a berth!

And because FSR couldn't be bothered to put another coach on! In other, more sensible European countries, it wouldn't be a problem.

I'm not really sure FSR had another coach to put on!
