Next Thursday, I need to park my car somewhere on the WCML, preferably Preston or Warrington BQ, for a trip to Glasgow (by train). The plan is to park at about noon and be back about 11pm.
  • What's the parking like at these 2 stations?
  • Am I likely to get a space at either around lunchtime?
  • Will my car still have its wheels when I get back?
  • Any off station car parks close by I can consider if the station is full when i arrive?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Preston has a £25 VT ONLY cheap day return, if that helps make your decision:D

Thanks, but the train fare isn't a consideration, my ex-BR protected status deals with that. My query is all about whether I'll be able to get a car park space at lunchtime.

Fair enough!
Doesn't Preston have a multi storey? Warrington doesn't, there are two car parks one right next to the station which IIRC is rather small and often full.

Another VT car park is further down, around a 5 minute walk, and usually has, again IIRC, plenty of spaces.

Wigan North Western car park always appears to have plenty of spaces whenever I pass if that's any use?

Preston is multi storey, IIRC "only" £5 after 10am, and never seems full.

I believe that VT have recently changed the peak times for parking at Preston, with off peak £5 now being after 11:00 on weekdays, not 10:00. Weekends/bank holidays are now £3 a day instead of £2.

You'll always get a space at Wigan North Western but I wouldn't recommend it. There's been a considerable rise in car crime in the Wigan town centre and immediate areas over the past couple of months. So much so that the BTP place liveried vans at the station car park entrance now and again as a deterrent - but Greater Manchester Police don't seem interested in trying to tackle it. I'd go with Preston or Warrington if I were the OP.

Useful heads up, thanks, as I occasionally park there.

As a Wiganer, when I need to park in town for the station or for anything else, I park up at Hey Street near Gidlow Lane in Wigan or in the Caroline/Queen Street area and walk up. It's less secure than a car park but I'm a skinflint and don't mind a walk. :P
