Years ago I remember a number of car transporter trains thundering through Nuneaton, but can't remember seeing one for years.

Have these services now stopped and opted for road transport instead?

They still run. I have noticed Land Rover and Ford vehicles amd a new flow has started from Toton to the tunnel for Toyota (?)

I saw one recently from an early morning train from Liverpool Lime Street. I forget where but somewhere before Stafford and I seem to remember it was carrying vans not cars.

I'd be surprised if it was Toyota, given the location of their manufacturing plant in Derby!

My mistake. I somehow misread Toton as Tinsley!

No loading locations 'on-site' for Toyota though, so road-transporting the vehicles to Toton before putting them on a train seems sensible. Certainly Toyota is the most obvious candidate for the location - there's no other manufacturing sites near Toton

Academic anyway, as this Rail Article confirms:

DB Cargo UK and Groupe CAT have officially launched a new international car-carrying service for Toyota between the UK and France.

Following a series of trials, fully loaded trains are now operating twice a week between Toton, in Nottinghamshire, and Valenciennes, near Lens in northern France.

On the outward journey, up to 250 hybrid Corollas built at Toyota’s Burnaston plant are exported using a specialist wagon fleet. These previously mothballed wagons have been refurbished and modified by their owner Groupe CAT to take wider and taller cars, at a cost of £3 million.

For the return leg, an equal number of Aygo and Yaris models manufactured on the continent are imported using the same wagons.

The cars are loaded and unloaded at Toton from a new £2.6m vehicle storage compound that spans some 4.25 acres of previously redundant sidings.

The building work was commenced by Britcon in September 2021 and involved the import of 11,000 tonnes of construction material.

More than 800 metres of new track has been laid, 900 metres of security fencing erected, and several miles worth of cabling installed to facilitate all the necessary CCTV and lighting. Additionally, 1,100 metres of road was built or widened so that car transporters can take the Toyota vehicles to and from the site.

The launch of the new service means that Toyota joins a small but growing list of DB Cargo UK customers to routinely use the Channel Tunnel.

Indeed - To and from Oxford Cowley for BMW Mini Production and from Halewood for Jauguar. I'm not sure if anything comes out of Castle Bromwich these days?

Very little out of the CB itself these days, but I believe it's used for Solihull's production (Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, and F Pace) as well. Worth noting that Halewood, whilst Jaguar once upon a time, just makes the 'small' landrovers (Evoque and Discovery Sport)

Ah, thanks for that. I'm surprised at the lack of vehicles coming out of CB - I'd have thought those DB Cartic's would have been ideal for conveying those F Pace's around. Not surprised about Halewood though, you often see full rakes of Evoque's on those STVA wagons.

Toyota send Corollas and some other cars by Road transporter to Toton these then head to Spain.
On the return to UK they import Yaris and some other small car.

Sadly shouldn't be a surprise - CB only produces the XE and XF saloons these days, hardly best sellers, let alone best sellers in markets accessible by train!

That said though, the Cartics probably do contain a few F Paces (couple of them in a row, 7th vehicle back), they're made in Solihull on the same line as the very similar F Paces, JLR move cars from Solihull to the CB loading terminal for onward transfer. Certainly historically at least, not so sure if JLR are still using any car trains!

What I don't get is the car transporters are does in the middle for clearance.
But you've still got a bit of the vehicle poking up at the end?

Ford has a vehicle distribution compound at Speke which receives vehicles from Dagenham by train.

From Dagenham? Ford haven't built a car in Dagenham in years- it's been an engine plant for quite a while now. Maybe they're coming in from the continent?

Correct - they have their own wharf within the complex.

I think that the cars and vans come in by train now through the channel tunnel. There are paths available from Dollands Moor Sidings to Dagenham Dock Reception.

I think that must be the case, as per Port of London Authority.
When I worked there 35 years ago my office overlooked the dock, and there was a great flurry of activity when time came to unload the cars from the ferry. But I thought that trains were used as well nowadays. Transits come all the way from Istanbul, and cars from Germany & Spain, so rail would be a sensible way to move them.

Ford don’t build any vehicles in UK anymore, I think it is just engines.

They used to make Transits at a plant by Southampton airport, and these used to go on carflats (like the old motorail ones). My memory is fuzzy but I think these were vacuum braked

Transfesa train from Spain to Fords has run for many years.
