:?: Other than the obvious routing via Lockerbie, Carstairs, Slateford and Haymarket (albeit with trains not necessarily stopping at intermediate stations), are there any other "Any Permitted" routes available when using tickets between Carlisle and Edinburgh Waverley?

You are allowed to travel via Glasgow. I have used it before and walked between Central and Queen Street.

I don't know if you are looking for a bit of rail bashing if you are allowed to do Edinburgh - Falkirk Grahamson - Cumbernauld - Motherwell - Carlisle ;)

Yes. This is how to work it out.

This Routeing Point Identifier shows that Carlisle is a Routeing Point (page 12) and that Edinburgh is a member of Edinburgh Group Routeing Point (page 22).

Then this Permitted Route Identifier shows that permitted routes between Carlisle and Edinburgh Group (page 147) are on map LM only. (To find this quickly, type "Carlisle Edin" into the search box.)

The maps are here. Map LM shows quite a large number of permitted routes.
