If you have the super offpeak return at £29.70, the basic rule is that there is no restriction on break of journey in either direction unless specific restriction code imposes restrictions. Here the restriction code is PU, which contains no restrictions on break of journey in either direction.

See this page from National Rail Enquiries for the default terms of a super offpeak return:

http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/servi...dfares/MYB/SBT/today/1400/dep/041217/1200/dep

If you have a different ticket, the restrictions may be different, of course.

Crikey, Twitterers are getting incompetent these days.

Break of Journey is ALWAYS allowed on the RETURN half of a walk up period return ticket.

On the OUTWARD half, it depends on the restriction code (unless it's an Anytime in which case it is allowed in both directions).

BoJ is always allowed on the return portion of all tickets. (not overnight for day tickets)

Is this advice from the twitter team at Chiltern correct?

Could you edit your post to include a quote please? That way our blind members/readers can still read it, thanks :)

To answer the question: they are incorrect. It is sometimes the case that it is the other way round to what they said, but there is no break of journey restriction on this ticket.

I *think* it is not protected for Day tickets, i.e. TOCs *can* restrict it, but it may be the case that none actually *do*. There is almost no reason to restrict BoJ on Day tickets because the main reason it is restricted (using a period return as a season ticket until it is stamped) isn't relevant. A very few cases where a longer distance ticket is cheaper than a shorter distance one may however provide another reason.

Off Peak: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46590.aspx
Off Peak Day: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46579.aspx

The latter is missing the paragraph that guarantees BoJ being allowed on the return half.

There are some Super Off Peak Day tickets which purport to prohibit break of journey.

Unfortunately break of journey (BOJ) is no longer actually defined in the NRCoT. The old NRCoC did define it.

BOJ restrictions are not contained in the fares data, so arguably the concept of barring BOJ (on walk-up fares) is incompatible with modern retail methods. I can understand BOJ restrictions existing for Advance fares (but even then, the guidance issued by ATOC/RDG is to let people off!).

If a walk-up ticket is sold with no mention of a BOJ restriction then it is arguably not enforceable anyway.

At least some of the Chiltern tweeters do know BOJ is allowed:

Yes on a return you will be able to break the journey if it is an anytime, off peak or super off peak ticket
