Okay, so what stock in storage right now could this theoretically cover? The suggestion of 165s from Chiltern above presumably wouldn't do as they're not available either.
The contributor on WNXX says the operator that will release the extra 6 or so 2/3-car units must receive replacement stock first.
I don’t have an answer as to what it could be, but that’s irrelevant. As a driver at Mach depot, TFW’s 158’s could be staying with them a fair while yet, there’s still no sign of us being trained on 197’s and they’ve not even finished testing and route clearing them on the Cambrian yet.

If they’re 2/3 car units that also says not TFW 158’s as they don’t have any 158’s in 3 car sets and I doubt GWR will form them into 3 cars after they’ve recently informed their 3 car 158’s.

If you were to find a few more Turbostars from anywhere EMR have 9 158s which are the same spec and owner as the existing GWR fleet of former Transpennine units, albeit with nearly 20 years of subsequent engineering divergence and different interiors.

I guess that’s the issue though. Good luck finding any spare Turbostars. ScotRail cut their nose off and released too many meaning they’re now having to open a new line with just an hourly service. EMR as we all know seem to have gone Turbostar mad. XC, Northern and Southern would likely all require new build stock to come in.

Chiltern shuffling about 168’s to release 165’s seems about the only plausible way this could really work, and even then it’s reliant on the MK5’s to Chiltern, something that is definitely at a crossroads as mentioned in the last page.

Yes it would be although GWR never received the 769s either and consequently GWR regional services are struggling for stock even before service enhancements in Cornwall, Devon (Cullompton / Wellington), and Bristol. Also, too many 5-car IETs are operating from Paddington due to being used on Cardiff-Penzance.
Not only on Cardiff - Penzance. At least 2 a day are trundling between Worcester and Bristol on stoppers.

Reported on WNXX Forum today by a credible source that a deal has been been put together for GWR to receive all 27 175s and half a dozen 2 or 3-car units from elsewhere.
Where would GWR (if they had the 175s) use them? What routes?

Upthread the informed posts (Clarence Yard) said that Cornish mainline & Cardiff - Taunton stoppers, Barnstaple and Okehampton, releasing 80x for Intercity work, 158s for (most of the) Cardiff - Portsmouth and 150s for Mid Cornwall Metro.

Okehampton releases 2 150s and Barnstaple 3 158s. Not enough 150s for Cornwall, especially in summer. If the 175s end up Paignton-Exmouth which will happen if stabled at Exeter it would be a disaster.

Why will it be a disaster? 158s are currently stabled at Exeter and do end up on Paignton - Exmouth from time to time and the world doesn’t end.

All that is potentially proposed is largely replacing Exeter’s 158s with 175s.

I would imagine it would allow more turbos on Devon metro which would be ideal as that kind of work is their bread and butter.

175s are not suitable for Paignton - Exmouth because of the door layout (but then nor are 158s). Short-forming to Exmouth has been a big problem recently as so many 150s seem to be unavailable. Looks as though 207 came back from Wolverton yesterday, having already spent time there and then sent back.

The main issue with the short forms is unavailability of turbos, meaning the 4 car 150 diagrams have to be split to cover. There's a 2 car 158 on Exmouth Paigntons today

A 2 car 158 on Saturday Paignton-Exmouth is not a good thing. 158s maybe alright Barnstaple to Exeter but the return must have a long loading dwell time at Central and St David's.

I must say, I’ve only done a little summer rail travel around the area, but have done plenty of travel on 175’s. 175’s are great units even on routes where the end door layout may not be ideal. As long as GWR are able to have a sufficient number of carriages on 175 operates services, they will be a great addition on any route.
Certainly Mike’s and miles better than any other unit that runs shortformed.

Better than a 2 car 150 though in terms of capacity

As long as the engine bay is checked and has debris removed regularly there won’t be any issues.

Joking aside, is there no way of sealing off the part of the engine bay that is prone to debris build up? Maybe some mesh over any openings to prevent debris from entering but still allowing for ventilation?

They’re very well panelled compared to other units, I’ve often wondered if the panels prevent the debris getting pushed out by airflow, so the answer is, I’m totally the wrong person to answer it haha ! But it does seem like there should be a relatively easy solution.

Reported on WNXX Forum today by a credible source that a deal has been been put together for GWR to receive all 27 175s and half a dozen 2 or 3-car units from elsewhere.

We know GWR had to provide a short and medium term fleet strategy to DfT by end of March (It is commitment 4-3 with detail in 3.1, on page 18 of DfT published business plan 2023-24).

The proposal had to be in by 15th September 2023 (commitment 4-1 on page 16) so DfT has had 7 months to think about it

Basic logic says if the strategy followed 6.5 months after proposal, then GWR have known for 2 weeks what the fleet strategy is (even if it has not been made public). By definition cannot have an agreed strategy that is speculative, which means it cannot be conditional on unknown factors eg possibility of another operator releasing a fleet sometime in next year or three.

Therefore the Business Commitments mean whatever is agreed, which has to be any fleet with confirmed availability (and it could be the 175s) are now known (ie what, where and when) to GWR, even if that info isn't public.

So good chance the official info is known, even if what source says is unable to be evidenced.
