I'd be interested in knowing how they plan on driving the unit if the motor coach is being binned! Perhaps it's just 448, being as it is the Renatus prototype...
Maybe distributing the traction motors throughout rather than one coach? Should help with acceleration.

Indeed, Not my video. I have to say I'm surprised they're chomping through the 321 fleet now (I'd rather see the back of the 319s to be honest!).

What are the operational advantages of a 321 vs a 319? From a rideship point of view I've always considered them to be very similar , they were built around the same time.

319s had pick-up shoes so that they could run on the DC south of London to places like Guildford, Sevenoaks and Brighton. North of London, they ran on AC only. They were also purpose-built to run through the (then) reopened Snow Hill tunnel

321s were AC-only and were direct replacements for elderly slam door Class 302/305/307/308 and 309

And 310, sort of (To be accurate, 317s replaced the 310s directly in 1987ish, but were themselves replaced by 321s within about 2 years).

To be pedantic, no 310s or 312s went for scrap as a result of the 321s being introduced. Various cascades took place with all 310s and most 312s ending up on the LTS route.

Wow the 321s sure seem to be going for scrap quickly - especially considering the poor reliability of the 720s...
Probably need to be out of the way before the Clacton works start!

Anglian 321s off lease are: - 334,44-45,48-52,56,58,63-64,66 / 422,25,35,38,42

334 is destined for Wabtec for other work

There is a reduced timetable - Southend Branch is down to 1 train per hour off-peak. That's a lot of trains sitting around that are not needed. I guess GA are banking on introducing a fair few more 720's before lockdown eases. The availability of extra test paths gives them a chance to get the 720's doing more mileage accumulation on the GEML and train a few more drivers too.

Just strange how fast things shift sometimes. It's only weeks ago that they brought in extra 321/322s from Northern.

It seems rather ironic that the GA 321s are being scrapped en masse,when their Scottish contemporaries, the 320s, are in the process of being refurbished for a further 15-20 years' service.

More importantly, class 319 have a 750V DC bus cable through the train which I believe was the main bonus for Flex conversion. The diesel gensets under each driving car would share the output via the bus, theoretically making the diesel output a virtual 3rd rail supply.

Being AC units with a single pantograph > transformer > motor car control system > traction motors there is no DC bus on class 321, hence not so useful as a Flex type conversion
