Stuart Broad has just announced he's retiring from cricket after this match.
Highly unsurprised. He lives for Ashes cricket and there ain't any more of that for a couple of years yet. Surprised he's not going to close out the summer with Notts, for all of that.

Has he played much for Nottinghamshire recently?
Played a few in the run-up to this summer, and tends to do so as much as possible in that April/May time as far as the ECB allow it (ECB usually allow England contracted bowlers to play about 4 out of 6 of their county’s matches).

Will Mark Wood replace Stuart Broad as opening bowler in future Test Matches?
Ollie Robinson in the short term. Same sort of thing wobble-seam wise, but Broad will be greatly missed. Sam Cook (the so-called mini-Chef) is well in line to replace Jimmy Anderson as a new ball bowler.

Sam Cook might have to wait, especially as Jimmy Anderson has already announced he's no intention of retiring anytime soon, unless Brendan McCullum has other plans

Stuart Broad goes with his head held extremely high. Always think it's best to announce a retirement just before you are due to go.

Probably just behind Anderson, Willis and Trueman who I believe are our genuine greats but a superb cricketer for England.

Just a shame he got thar nasty blow to his head as I think he would have averaged 30 with the bat.

In the short term, bring Foakes back. He must be keeper in India given how good he is

Especially because spinners tend to bowl a much higher proportion of the overs in India. A non-specialist keeper will be horribly exposed

I expect Jimmy will retire this time next summer after the West Indies and Sri Lanka series, and I hope next summer is also an introduction for Sam Cook to Tests.

Broad only seems to be retiring young, when you compare him with Jimmy! Glenn McGrath also retired from international cricket at 37 for example, which is a very good age for a fast medium bowler.

Alec Stewart and Michael Atherton, England's opeming partners for some time. retired on the same day. at the conclusion of the Ashes series at the Oval in 2001. The difference between them was that Stewart had announced his intentions earlier that Summer, whereas Atherton only announced it at conclusion of play on the last day. It wouldn't surprise me to see Anderson doing something similar tomorrow or Monday. Whatever, Broad and Anderson going out to bat together tomorrow morning will get the biggest reception ever.

Jonny Bairstow today became the first England wicketkeeper in an Ashes series to post three 75 plus scores. Credit where it is due.

Anderson's wicket tally will be safe now. Their relative success in this series meant that Broad had a real chance of catching him if he played to the same age. Can anyone see another English bowler, of any type, ever approaching 700 wickets?

The only circumstance it could have happened in anything close to present is Rehan Ahmed, if he was actually good and also kept his place in the side as spinner for 15 or so years.

And extremely inflated...nice timing though, to ensure he gets the maximum coverage and adulation.

Robinson should never play for England again after his outburst in the first Test...that was about as far removed from sledging (perfectly acceptable and part of the game at all levels) as it's possible to get. Pure abuse, nothing more or less.

Allow me to correct your oversights in your list, starting with Statham, then Gough and also Botham...more names on request.

Disagree with your assessment on Broad here. Yes, like his dad he's got a hell of an ego. However in the main he's used it as a power of good for his country. He's needed reigning in a few times but unlike others has bounced back hard when dropped. Of course retiring after the event is the most dignified way. Retired before the event, like Stewart did is the most attention seeking method even if it wasn't his intention. Broad? No problems with his retirement timing. He clearly loved playing test cricket for his country too. If only Steve Harminson had had half of his desire.

Robinson? Yes acted like a bit of a d@ck but the fine line with 'banter' 'sledging' and abuse has always been just that. Please don't tell me the likes of Merv Hughes, Glenn McGrath, Geoff Lawson etc didn't cross the line from time to time. Robinson needs to work on his overall fitness and condition if he's going to be asset to England.

Happy to always discuss England's best here. Guess the genuine great pace bowlers are counted on one hand. Of course then you can split them up into genuine fast, swingers etc.

Good. Completely deserves the coverage and adulation too.

You've made it clear over the past year that you cannot stand the man. But to then try and chuck Darren Gough into the discussion for one of our greatest whilst previously calling Broad overhyped and overrated? You cannot be taken seriously.

Best wishes to Broady, going out on a high (hopefully very high if we can win this test)

And he is fifth on the list of all time England batsmen in terms of sixes scored in tests, behind Stokes, Flintoff, KP and Botham.

Gough not in the same class as Broad. A good, wholehearted test cricketer who never let us down and clearly loved representing his country. In the same class as Hoggard, Caddick, Dilley and Fraser.

Including the six which was his last ever batting stroke in test cricket (it was the last of the over and Jimmy was dismissed in the next over).

Broad hit the last ball he faced in test cricket for six - the only other person to do that was Wayne Daniel of the West Indies, an excellent fast medium bowler who played few tests because of the presence of Holding. Roberts. Garner etc.

I wondered if something was up when his fiancé was on TMS

Broad is a triumph of determination, effort and stubbornness (in a good way).

Just a shame that he still can’t pick a review, and that he didn’t find time to mention the county that nurtured him for over a decade
