Update..
I tweeted XC on my daughter’s behalf and they said that she could travel between Birmingham and Reading with her ticket as XC had ticket acceptance in place with GWR.
However, they wouldn’t allow her to travel between Derby and Birmingham. She would need to ask the Train Manager’s permission.
I thought it best if she bought an advance single from Derby to Birmingham with her railcard, circa £7.30 to avoid any confrontation on board the train.
Everything worked out fine in the end, although the last train into Reading arrived about 15 minutes late.
Of course, the tube strike was cancelled at the 11th hour so she could have travelled via London without too much hassle, although there were still issues on GWR out of Paddington.
