Hello everyone. You maybe aware a 5-coach CrossCountry Voyager caught fire near Derby. I believe it was the 06:25 Plymouth to Edinburgh service (someone on Twitter asked if basically their 17:16 from Motherwell was the one that caught fire - XC replied 'I'm afraid so').

"Matt Navarra, who was also using the service, tweeted in reply to the train firm's two-word apology: "Is that all you're going to say about my train going up in flames filling carriage with smoke and endangering my life?""

Well, what else is there to say? How long do you want the word "sorry" to be?

BTP, XC and NR did a grand job of safely evacuating the train and ensuring everyone was safe.

The location appears to be Alfreton Road Bridge, also known as Breadsall Bridge where there is a track access point with steps leading up to a wide area grass verge alongside the road above.

Does anyone know how the situation was dealt with, if the evacuated passengers were led up the steps, was transport arranged to take them back to Derby Station?

It is alfreton road bridge as the bridge was closed for a period of time. There is an access point at the bridge but looking at Twitter the passengers seemed to of headed south. The next access point south is around Chester green which is a fair walk away.

As for transport it would be likely that buses or taxis would take the passengers back to Derby where they would get the next service or even possibility have to wait for the set to come back for luggage that could be left on the train.

From the report on the local BBC news tonight they were evacuated from a the train to a nearby car park where they were transported back to Derby station. It went on to say that some of the passengers waited to be reunited with the luggage they had left on the train and were taken to the first class lounge where sandwiches were provided. They went on to say is took about 5 hours to get the train back to Derby station. They interviewed 2 passengers who had nothing but praise for the staff and while they were reporting there seemed to be plenty of staff about.

It took 5 hours as it looked like it was going to go back to Derby under its own power as only 1 vehicle was affected. After a while a set of on end of 1V60? Came up and rescued it as 5D43.

I do like how the Derby telegraph reports that the train was the 1203 Penzance to Glasgow service and then later on a Birmingham to Glasgow service.

(Opinion) Looks like they’ll just have to work the vastly superior HSTs harder :D

Sorry to bump an old thread - does anybody know which unit was involved?

Looks like a driving car- could they use one of the stored ones instead and scrap the burned out one.

The two driving cars are back in use as far as I'm aware and the damage is nowhere near enough to warrant scrapping it.

They are going to split the unit up and put the three carriages into three four car units

Passed the unit at central rivers the other day. It looked like the whole engine has been taken off the unit possibly for investigation work to find the cause of the fire.

There aren't any driving vehicles stored anymore. Two 5-cars became 4-cars (140 and 141 I think) to form an additional 4-car (221144)

News to anyone else! Where'd you get that nugget from? How are they going to put the other driving vehicle into an existing unit?

They couldn't do it with the DMSL, but there isn't anything stopping them putting the three intermediate vehicles in other units if they wanted to.

True. My maths doesn't work when I'm tired. Proof right there.

Can't be 221141 I'm afraid as that has always been a 4-car Super Voyager since built and remains in her current configuration.

Taken from a previous thread, this will certainly answer your question:
https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...-with-crosscountry.153771/page-2#post-3195832

Current formation:

221144 - 60494+60990 (ex-221140)+60794 (ex-221144 then 221143)+60394
221140 - 60490+60890+60790+60390
221136 - 60386+60786+60886+60486

221143 - 60393+60993+60994 (ex-221144 then 221142)+60793+60493
221142 - 60392+60992+60986 (ex-221136)+60792+60492
