Class 700 also have them on the desk.

Indeed, as do other types, HSTs and the voyager sub classes to name a couple.


I'm not sure I'd like to have a dip function or have any requirement to dip for passing trains. I'd see that as a distraction and from a metro perspective, I'd be dipping the lights quite often.

Agreed - and the whole point of having different DRL and NRLs is to avoid the dazzle risk and therefore a dip button is unnecessary so long as this is done correctly.

I have no idea if European trains have the same arrangement, if not perhaps a dip button is necessary.


the same could be said for some LED signal heads.

Yup that’s it, in Europe it’s basically low beam + main beam, that’s why the dip button is useful.

On the Cardiff Valleys there's a local instruction where they use the night setting all the time. No idea why - although it might be because the headlights are set by the guard when changing ends to speed up turnaround times.
