Some details in this MEN report, though it doesn't say a lot.

Major disruption on Manchester trains after all lines blocked

Passengers are being warned of major disruption on trains in Manchester city centre today after all lines were blocked due to an 'object' on the overhead wires.

The object was caught on the wires at Deansgate station, according to National Rail. All lines running through the affected area to and from Manchester Oxford Road were blocked from around 11am.

Train services were being cancelled or delayed on East Midlands Railway, Northern, Transport for Wales and TransPennine Express services. The lines were re-opened at around 1.30pm but major disruption is expected to last until around 3.45pm this afternoon, with services hit by delays of up to an hour.

The routes affected include East Midlands Railway between Liverpool Lime Street and Nottingham / Norwich and Northern between Barrow-in-Furness / Windermere / Blackpool North / Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Airport, and also between Southport / Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road.

The TransPennine Express between Edinburgh / Glasgow Central / Saltburn and Manchester Airport, and also between Liverpool Lime Street and Cleethorpes routes are also affected as well as Transport for Wales Llandudno and Manchester Airport.

From what I saw services north of Preston were hit, with southbound TPE services from Scotland terminating at Preston, while Northern services from Barrow were terminating at Lancaster platform 2 (proving it can handle class 195 sets)
Several cancellations on the Morecambe line (including the Heysham trip) due to staff unavailability, which may or may not be related.

RRBs were announced from Preston with the first rail service Preston-Manchester (ex Blackpool) posted as departing at 12:21 though whether this ran I don't know. I baled out and stopped in Preston instead

This along with the stuck train near Carstairs, the problems near Tring yesterday and the trespasser at Manchester Piccadilly on Friday have really made a bad few days for the WCML.

Also the fatality near Darlington is not helping either...

Surprised that this seems not to have been posted about so far.

Possibly some of us are a bit reticent to instigate a disruption thread when the existence of disruption is known but the extent of its severity is less clear.
A scolding from a mod and a reminder about the forum rules is a likely possibility if disruption turns out to be underwhelming.

I can confirm that the MCO-WAC-LIV stopper due 13:57 at Urmston arrived at 14:34. I will decline compensation and counselling.

At the time the National Rail website said the disruption due to an item in contact with the overhead wires. I noticed on Traksy that some trains continued to run such as all CLC services, TfW, and the TPEx Saltburn service were all passing through. Of course these are all diesel so I suspect the overhead power had been disabled. Why the Barrow service terminated at Lancaster in a mystery.
Many trains picked up a 20-40 minuted delay so I presume all trains were stopped for a period and this continued until about 14:00. This was typical;

Believed to be foliage in contact with the OHLE. Yet another reason that vegetation needs to be kept properly under control rather than trimmed into train-shaped green tunnels.

A relative of mine started at University of Salford today and I suggested try getting there by rail. Of course they get caught up in this on Day 1…

Meant to get the 1041 from East Didsbury to Huyton earlier, wasn't best pleased when that, the 11:41 and the 12:41 were all cancelled! Found out the 13:41 and 14:41 were also cancelled as well as my return! Not a great day to be travelling on the Styal line.
