So in theory,how long would it take or more to the point cost,to implement doo on the northern rail network,and what kind of franchise length would be needed to make this viable.

You'd need trains where the driver can operate the doors, which means most modern stock, which means little of Northern's DMU stock, so its not on the agenda any time soon.

Northern is probably one the most expensive and protracted examples you could have picked - it serves a huge number of stations with what typically isn't modern stock, running through some very rural areas.

Whilst some bits of Northern might be potential candidates for DOO (looking solely at what currently is DOO and comparing) - say bits around Manchester or Leeds - many of Northern's routes would have to be right at the end of any hypothetical whole network conversion.
