This did not happen at 15:00, it happened last night at around 01:45. Two passengers found the driver being dead in the cab and immediately called emergency services.

For the record, Arriva Limburg services operate DOO.

According to the report, the train had stopped after hitting a deer, so the driver might have unlocked the cab to investigate.
Yes, the article mentions the driver got off the train to investigate. As those Stadler GTWs don't have cab doors on the outside, the driver will have opened the door to the passenger area to get off the train and back on.

Gosh, that’s a really tragic thing to happen and especially so at this time of the year. Thoughts go to his family, RIP.

How did they get into the cab? Is it not locked?
That's not known at the moment. It could be that the driver left the cab door open, but perhaps passengers forced their way in.

The door separating the passenger area from the cab is just a glass door, see here:

It could be that after the passengers knocked on the door and got no response, used an emergency hammer to puncture the glass and get access to the cab.

OK, so I guess they could see him through the glass, and if they started shouting and hitting the door and the driver didn't even move, it would have made sense to try and gain access
