I shall be travelling on a Saturday East Croydon - Gravesend, then returning to East Croydon from Borough Green.

Could I have some suggestions about the cheapest ticket please?

An offpeak day return from East Croydon to Maidstone stations would be valid via Gravesend (where you could get off on your outward journey) or via Borough Green (where you could board on your return journey).

If you wanted to go via St Pancras and the highspeed line on the outward journey, the fare would be £26.10. Otherwise, the fare would be £23.20 (valid via London but not the highspeed line, so you could go Croydon-London Bridge-Lewisham-Gravesend on the outward journey, and return Borough Green-Victoria-Croydon). There is also a £17.10 "not via London" offpeak day return, but that's not going to cover what you need.

Do you have any railcards, or a London zones travelcard?

Thank you - I was thinking a return to Maidstone might do it, which you've confirmed.

I agree re the "not via London" fare - there seems no way of getting from Croydon to Gravesend (apart from the most convoluted routes imaginable) without going via London.

No cards or travelcard unfortunately so will probably go for the non-highspeed fare. High speed is tempting, but it takes such an age at the moment to get to St Pancras on Thameslink.

Yes, walking feels quicker than Thameslink. Try Victoria line to Vauxhall then a quick hop to Clapham Junction? That happens to be on the route of a bargain Gravesend to Epsom ticket. Or Victoria itself for direct trains to Croydon? But i don't know of a cheap ticket option there.

Also consider walking between London Bridge and Blackfriars. It's my goto choice if off-peak and if you walk fast you can overtake the Thameslink train
