Hello everyone. Seeing a pretty large amount of disruption and a huge backlog both ways up the ECML today in the Newark station area. Any idea what's causing this backlog?

Now chaos at Reston. Gbrf 4E04 been sat since 14:40. Severbal trains stuck behind.

1W16 just passing the area 105 minutes late.

Anyone know why 4E04 is there?
Single line working not available to get southbound trains past?

I've renamed the thread to include this. Glad I'm not travelling today

Was this the one that had a bad wagon that needed inspecting? I might be getting confused with another freight train but unsure.

I think it is, as nothing is heading north while 4E04 moves south, currently approaching Berwick.

Also LNER 1H10 now in trouble at Arlesey, all services on both up and down diverted to slow lines.

Got a family member heading back from Newcastle to Lincoln caught up in it. Hopefully he gets back OK

This is what the LNER website says (https://www.lner.co.uk/travel-information/travelling-now/travel-alerts/):
17:18 London Kings Cross to Hull due 20:04 will no longer call at Selby.
It is being delayed between London Kings Cross and Peterborough.
This is due to a fault on this train.

Causes Newcastle to experience the "Preston Paradox" whereby right-time arrivals from the south are unable to continue north as the crews to take them onwards are stuck on halted southbound trains. Newcastle has the added issue of fewer platform options for long trains.

1E20 has left Newcastle just the 215 late. Ouch. At least it's not been cancelled I suppose.

Looks like 4E04 has sat down again, running bang-road at Tweedmouth crossover south of Berwick. If it had made it to the next signal and cleared the crossover, then the route behind it would have released.
I’m guessing that the damaged curtain is on the right hand side of the train, so that, by putting 4E04 on the down line, it can be worked on without blocking the other line.

I was a bit fortunate with this one as I was getting the 1555 off York (the 1400 Kings Cross to Aberdeen) as far as Newcastle. 30 minutes late, but if you were going north it was diverting via the Tyne Valley, and if you wanted Berwick-upon-Tweed it was a replacement bus.

Lots of people will be getting all their money back.

Who picks up the tab for all the delay repayments when a defect on a GB Rail Freight train effectively closes the ECML between Newcastle and Edinburgh for several hours?

Just seen 1W20 (1400 ex King’s Cross at Haymarket), a slight 149 minutes late!

LNER already confirmed I'm getting half my money back, so get those delay-repay claims in...

Delay Repay is not ‘covered’ by the performance regimes. So each passenger operator has to take it on the chin. In practice it’s a revenue shortfall for OLR/DOHL/LNER, i.e. DfT/Treasury, i.e The Taxpayer.

My family member that that got caught up in it was supposed to be on that. He got back to Lincoln by taking a TransPennine to York and then the 18:02 to Doncaster to change. That TransPennine was very busy apparently, but at least he got back alright.

Thank you. I suspected that was the case!

Looks like it's going to be another bad day today. A bridge strike at Grantham has caused more delays this morning. My wife is on the 7:04 from Newcastle to Kings Cross and it's 52 minutes late passing St Neots.

And currently a points failure at Hitchin is lousing things up somewhat.
