Edinburgh-London rail journeys "to be cut to 4 hours"

But probably not in this case. Marshall Meadows SFC might be late, but it’s well in progress. Benton and Ulgham feeder stations entered service last year, and a number of other switching locations were also commissioned.

Yeah probably, can't answer if I had to be honest. Was just being naive and assuming it was already common knowledge, it's not something I've been following.

It is an interesting proposal - but apart from some early kite-flying, once it became known the closest it got to a large conurbation (Motherwell) a large potential market lost interest. (Probably so as not to compete with AWC).
I thought the point of privatisation was to introduce competition to keep railfares low?

No - it was to put money into the pockets of backers of the Tories, who'd take profits out of the railway leading to higher fares.

That's nonsense but it's not the right area of the forum to discuss it - I'm sure there's a very long thread having his debate elsewhere

Just putting a word in though for the people saying "we don't need 3tph to London at the expense of cross-north links" - presumably haven't seen the loadings the Edinburgh services leaving London are getting (and starting to get all year round) - regularly departing KGX with every seat taken. It's a rapidly growing market so it's entirely reasonable they want to grow it. Sadly the only way to make everyone happy would be to introduce some new infrastructure to free the tracks up for more local and semi-fast services (rings a distinct bell!)

It was a necessary decision but its pretty poor of the collective rail industry to have failed on a second occasion after all the money that has been invested in enhancements.

It had been dragging on too long after earlier statements saying a decision needed to be made in early February. As time rumbled on it became less & less likely anything would happen this December.

Indeed but it sounds like it was never viable anyhow so shouldn't have been on the radar. Lot of time, resources and cost wasted on it and doubt it will ever be realisable until more money is spent on infrastructure.

Surely this was dead in the water from when services at Northallerton (in Mr Sunak's constituency) and nearby Thirsk and Darlington in question, and not served by HS2, and maybe-to-be- independent Edinburgh shouting it wasn't going to happen. Much safer to 'revive' Victorian Britain Stockton- Darlington, links to free enterprise Teeside Freeport etc etc. Stand clear, General Election approaching ...

It'd have been fascinating to know how it would have panned out if there weren't any freight rights getting in the way. As it is these are a technical reason the changes can't proceed as hoped, so no doubt a bit of a figleaf
