All that is missing from Sunday network is bus from Fauldhouse - West Calder - Livingston or Blackburn to Livingston. Alas some Direct links are now gone but you can still get to places.

A couple of posts have been removed because of their rather disrespectful nature. Unfortunately that means that the following posts that referred to them have also been deleted.

This is a speculative thread, and the whole idea behind it was that forum members could make suggestions without cluttering up the main Lothian thread. Sometimes people will post suggestions that are completely unworkable and you are free disagree, but you must do so respectfully. If you cannot do so politely, then it's probably better that you don't post at all.

You’ve got some interesting ideas for sure. I do think many probably wouldn’t work for a number of reasons, mostly that it’s making one person’s journey into two services though.

The changes to the existing ECB network work rather well, but the addition of the X8 etc is potentially resulting in too many Lothian services being taken away.

One time I suggested that Lothian (or Lothian Country?) should open a Midlothian depot - in my view somewhere near Bonnyrigg, and I haven’t changed my opinion on that. Lots of people live outside of Edinburgh now due to the slightly cheaper house prices and lots of buses dead run out to here from the city already. Similarly a depot close to Granton Harbour may be more beneficial, and lastly a depot in Haddington for all East Coast Buses operations (replacing both Musselburgh and North Berwick) I think would be a sensible choice as well.

Changeovers are probably the one sticking point in all of this, but if better facilities were built on certain routes that could also maybe be an option? Again random ideas I’ve had for months, just not sure what would be best.

I agree about a depot in Midlothian. I think that they need more depots (even smaller outstations) for specific routes.

Haddington sounds interesting as well but I think that North Berwick outstation would probably have to be kept.

I know a lot of my ideas are unworkable but the idea is more about giving people living in Midlothian and East Lothian faster links to Edinburgh city centre and also giving people in Edinburgh a more reliable service with the routes not going too far. I didn’t make many changes to West Lothian services as I know that the area isn’t so profitable.

When I'm on the bypass I'm always seeing buses running back to Longstone. I would have thought that the Dalkeith and Lasswade would be good recruiting areas as well as reducing dead mileage With the gentrification of North Edinburgh it must be increasingly difficult to recruit to Central.

I think it would work with it being ECB cross Lothian maybe? Have a few ECB vehicles there that worked from Musselburgh the previous day, reducing the amount of Lothian Buses used on ECB to none.

ECB means East Coast Buses for those wondering.

At the suggestion of @Bus9120UK, I decided to post my revised network. Again, there’s some probably ridiculous suggestions here but I’ve tried to keep it within some realm of possibilities. Just a quick heads up my fictitious bridge from ASDA The Jewel to Fort Kinnaird exists in this, just incase you get confused. Anyway, here we go:

1 - Extended to Davidson’s Mains Tesco.

2 - Gyle to Fort Kinnaird via The Jewel ASDA, terminating at new Bus Hub.

3 - As is. 10 minute frequency restored.

4 - Extended to Bush. Serves ASDA/Fort Kinnaird Bus Hub en route to QMU.

5 - To take on 49’s route from Leith Street to Fort Kinnaird, serving the former route via Lochend Road South/Drive. It would also serve ASDA/Bus Gate vice A1.

7 - Extended to Western Harbour to maintain connections to Leith. An expanded terminus is therefore needed.

8 - Starts from Silverknowes via Pennywell Gardens. Earlier morning journey from Silverknowes at 04:24 introduced.

9 - Starts from Granton Harbour instead of Muirhouse. Route to run via Granton Square, Waterfront Avenue, West Granton Road, Crewe Road North, Boswall Parkway, then as current route to Bellevue. Route also revised to serve Great King Street and The Mound instead of Leith Street. Still works in coordination with 8.

This would restore links that the 47 offers which are currently lost.

10 - No change to current proposal.

11 - No change to current proposal.

12 - Rerouted to serve Hermiston Gait rather than South Gyle Crescent. Stops added on Morrison Link. Evening and Sunday service withdrawn. No change to Termini.

14 - Changed to terminate at Martello Court, serving Pennywell Gardens in both directions.

X15 - Renumbered from 15 and re-extended to Deanburn but changed to be peak hours only - both directions in both peaks. City to Bush and Deanburn to City in mornings. City to Deanburn and Bush to City in evenings. 4 will serve Bush during the day and at weekends.

16 - No Change to current proposal. 17 introduced to relieve pressure at south end. Revised network in North and North West Edinburgh to relieve pressure.

17 - New service introduced. This would run on the 5’s route between Fort Kinnaird and Surgeon’s Hall. Route would then continue via Nicolson Square and Lauriston Place before continuing onto Morningside and terminating at Hunter’s Tryst. Frequency every 20 minutes.

19 - Starts from Granton Harbour vice Granton Square. To be further extended to Queen Margaret University during weekday peak hours. Frequency reduced to every 20 minutes. Additonal peak time journeys between Granton and Leith Street to maintain a higher frequency at those times.

21 - Revised to serve Restalrig Road. Frequency to be every 20 minutes on all days of the week with all journeys running to Gyle Centre. Some additonal peak journeys added in.

22 - Current proposal to be implemented.

23 - No change to current proposal.

24 - No change to current proposal.

25 - Revised to serve Restalrig Road. Frequency every 10 minutes.

X25 - New peak only service running between Waterloo Place and Heriot Watt. Unlike the former service, this would run in the opposite directions (to Heriot Watt in the mornings, and to City Centre in the evenings). Up to 5 journeys each peak, with the stopping pattern be all stops Heriot Watt to Sighthill Colleges/University, then non stop to Chesser Avenue, then non stop to Westfield Sainsbury’s, then non stop to Western Approach Road at Fountainpark - all stops from there.

Some good suggestions there. I particularly like your idea for the 32 :)

Sounds good, but what would you propose for that routing? I’m assuming via the new housing?
It would have to run via Bellwood Road then Mauricewood Road if route extended to Deanburn. However, not sure whether Bellwood Road would be suitable for bus operation. Suggest therefore that the X15 runs down to Gowkley Moss then along the A701 up Mauricewood Road in then via Flotterstone to Hillend in the morning and vice versa in the afternoon. Layover/recovery time to be taken at Easter Bush.

26 - When Blindwells is developed enough, Tranent journeys diverted to serve.

X26 - To extend to Blindwells when development permits.

27 - No change.

29 - Buses to take layover at Silverknowes Promenade itself during summer daylight hours only. Outside of this, journeys do not serve the Promenade and terminate at the Golf Course.

X29 - Changed to start/end at West Granton instead of Muirhouse.

30 - Direct to QMU via A1. Double decks introduced but frequency reduced to every 15 minutes. Option to extended via Whitehill Road area and onto Millerhill when future housing is built.

31 - Polton Mill journeys extended to Rosewell.

X31 - No change to current proposal.

32 - New service on all days of the week running between Clovenstone and Musselburgh Tesco via Drum Brae North, Davidson’s Mains, Muirhouse, Waterfront, Melrose Drive, Commerical Street, Ocean Terminal, Salamander Street, Craigentinny Avenue, Wakefield Avenue, Portobello and Eastfield. Single decks every 30 mins. Ocean Terminal to Musselburgh section is a trial and would be reviewed in the future. This would create a direct link from Sighthill Campus to Granton Campus.

33 - No change. Options to extend to future new housing.

X33 - No change to current proposal.

34 - Previous routing from Marionville to Ocean Termianal via Great Junction Street restored.

35 - No change to current proposal.

36 - No change to current proposal.

37 - Reduced to a Saturday like service on weekdays, with all journeys running to Deanburn on a 20 minute frequency. This would increase to every 10 minutes during the peak between Silverknowes and Surgeon’s Hall.

X37 - Extra journeys introduced due to slight reduction in 37 frequency.

38 - Increased to every 20 minutes, rerouted to serve West Granton Road and Muirhouse, terminating at Martello Court.

43 - To maintain its 20 minute frequency throughout the day, increasing to every 15 minutes during the peak.

44 - No change. Option to extend to houses in Wallyford to be explored.

X44 - East route replaced by new X13. Equivalent West route restored on former route, running twice in each direction.

45 - Route changed to run from Heriot Watt to Hanover Street, before extending to Craigleith via former 42 route.

46 - To serve Stoneybank Crescent in Musselburgh. Evening/Sunday service removed.

47 - Current proposal to be trialled. 47B withdrawn.

X47 - New service to run from the old Cramond terminus to Barnton, then on a limited stop pattern to West End similar to that of the former X43. Route then serves current 47B route to Easter Bush, again running limited stop on the south section to the same pattern as the X37. Morning journeys to Bush, evening journeys to Cramond.

48 - No change to current proposal.

49 - To terminate at Ocean Terminal. To run via London Road, Lochend Drive, Restalrig Road and then as per current 34 route to Ocean Terminal via Salamander Street.

X5 - When Blindwells is developed enough, journeys diverted to serve.

X6 - No change to current proposal.

X7 - Registration changed to be split in Haddington rather than Dunbar High Street.

X13 - Replaces X44. Diverts to serve Futures Way in Wallyford and extends to Pencaitland via Elphinstone Village and Ormiston at the East End of the route, and down to West Granton at the opposite end.

106 - Re-extended to Fort Kinnaird and onto Royal Infirmary, via A1/QMU. Also serves Amisfield Park in Haddington - resources permitting. Option to increase to every 30 minutes.

113 - Re-extended to West Granton during Monday to Friday daytime. This would restore the direct link from Milton Road Campus to Granton Campus.

124 - No change to current proposal.

125 - No change to current proposal.

126 - No change to current proposal.

127 - No change to current proposal.

128 - No change to current proposal.

139 - Morning school run journey to be covered by duplicate double deck vehicle. At all other times the route will be single deck operated.

X18 - Extended to Rigghouse in Whitburn.

X27 - Resources permitting, increase back to every 30 minutes and reroute back to Whitburn via former route, terminating at Rigghouse.

X28 - Resources permitting, increase back to every 30 minutes.

200 - Hourly all night journeys introduced. Frequency to be every 30 minutes outside of this - fifth bus added for operational flexibility.

400 - Hourly all night journeys introduced. Extended to Queen Margaret University via Fort Kinnaird Bus Hub and A1.

N3 - No change to current proposal.

N11 - No change to current proposal.

N14 - No change to current proposal. Terminus moved to Muirhouse Roundabout - buses only stop for terminus check/screen change with layover expected to be taken at Surgeons’ Hall.

N113 - No change to current proposal.

N124 - Weekday morning journey from Edinburgh to Longniddry introduced.

I really like a lot of these change proposals!

Bringing back the 32 and changing the 21 to only run to the Gyle, it still gives Portobello a link to West Edinburgh with some alternatives to Granton and Drum Brae North.

I like the idea of expanding the network to work well with the passengers needs like restoring the 15 back to Penicuik and the 140/141 to run via Auchindinny which has been without a service for over 5 years now I believe.

Extending the 7 and 113 are perfect in my book. Only thing I can think to say I disagree with is scrapping the 12's Sunday service. If anything the best course of action would be to improve upon it. Extending it to Potterrow is proof there could be some potential. Stops do need to be added on Morrison Link for sure and finally while I do get rerouting it Via Hermiston Gait it would be cutting off the link between South Gyle and Parts of Corstorphine/Murray field, I would probably just extend the 2 back to the Gyle or reroute the 22.

Overall, I agree with most of what you've said. I think the best would be to get the 2 to be re-extended to the Gyle as you suggest. The 22 being rerouted via Hermiston Gait is not at all a good idea in my opinion, plus would leave South Gyle Broadway without a proper Sunday service.

Some good changes here, definitely considered what works and what doesn’t. A few things your changes to the 1 & 14 seem like they don’t do much though? What do the public gain if not the company? Some things like the 5 & 17 could definitely work it provides a reliable frequent service for people and its not an overload of buses shuttling about fresh air

That's a fair point! If the 300 was still around I would say that would of been a possible option! But who knows, our only hope is Lothian retrieving the 20/63 from McGills if given the opportunity.

To be fair since the 21 still provides a link between Clermiston and Davidson Mains I would think extending the 1 would be pointless, I would of maybe said Silverknowes Promanade would of been better probably?

I like the new 17 too!

The 1 was more of a random one I threw in. It was done to maintain a good frequency on the Drum Brae Drive to Davidson’s Mains section, whilst also providing a few new links that perhaps are not a necessity, but could be useful.

The 14 was an idea I threw in from personal experience, coupled with the fact I hate unnecessary one way loops. You’ll find that very few people board the sections on the loop now (it admittedly wasn’t loads before anyway) due to the 22 minute layover they take at Muirhouse now, while loads do get off.

The 17 I’ve never been fixed on one particular idea, but I’ve tried to maintain at least parts of the 5 and 45’s route as much as possible without it deviating ridiculously.

Regarding the 12, finding a fair balance was tricky, and I would still probably stick with what I’ve suggested, especially given the fact my 21 would run to the Gyle all day. Do I think Lothian might even try and cut the evening/Sunday service as well? Absolutely.

N25 - Increased to every 20 minutes on all mornings

There’s some nice proposals in the overall list, and since that I’m less convinced by… But there does seem to be an overall theme of “more buses for Herriot Watt, more buses for QMU, more buses for West Granton campus… but quite a few reductions for the University of Edinburgh campus at Bush?

Maybe that’s just coincidence but it feels like Bush loses its daytime services to Penicuik/ Loanhead/ Dalkeith/ Morningside/ Bridges (etc) whilst other student campuses get loads more journey options

(Yes, there’s still a version of the 15/47 at rush hour, plus the 4 will run to Bush but that’s best part of a ten minute time penalty for anyone heading to the city centre compared to the 15)

From my experience Bush is typically much quieter than the other campuses. Bush is very much a speciality campus, in that it only does certain areas of expertise. It’s one of the reasons it’s location is where it is. Compared that with Heriot Watt (a massive campus), and QMU (which has always been underserved) that was my logic behind that. The peak service fulfills those links at the times of day where demand is at its highest. Outside of that, I’ve always found Bush to be a rather quiet place.

To be fair Bush has about 4 different services at the moment so it's hardly underserved to say the least, same goes to Heriot Watt and after the next change QMU!

I'd say if anything maybe Lothian should prioritise the links between the Edinburgh College campuses, the 113 extension was so handy for Granton to Milton Road and the 32 used to provide the only link between Granton and Sighthill and now all these links are gone, I would say this is a priority for the long run.

I agree. I guess what you could do in my list is divert the 47 and that probably solves the majority of the issues. However, what it does do is then create an unhappy decision by slowing down the fastest route from Penicuik to the city. So really it’s a no win situation and only an extra service could really fix it.

However, what it does do is then create an unhappy decision by slowing down the fastest route from Penicuik to the city. So really it’s a no win situation and only an extra service could really fix it.
I know it is a weird one, but do you think extending the 49 could do something? Maybe as a trial do Fort Kinnaird to Bush? I also think they could make it a circular route with a 49 and a 49B with one going Clockwise and one going Anticlockwise?

Are you meaning like extend the 49 from Royal Infirmary? I know a few suggestions I see on Facebook are residents of Loanhead and Penicuik glammering for a direct link to the Royal Infirmary! It could be possible.

I've always thought the 15 should run from the Bush turning right instead of left at the junction with Bush Loan Rd., then turn left and go out past Flotterstone on the A702 then left again at the roundabout onto Mauricewood Rd. Then onto Penicuik Town centre. Same route on return to Edinburgh.

As part of the housebuilding at Mauricewood, there is a link road being build between Mauricewood Rd and Rullion Rd, so there's potential to run buses between the 2.

Ok, so I’ve made some custom bus changes to the Lothian network. I think that the one that I deem most necessary is the 24 frequency change (less likely for the Drylaw curtailment), but it’s definitely debatable.

Lothian Buses
Service 1 - Service Extended From Seafield to Portobello ALDI Via Marine Depot.
Service 3 - Revised route & frequency - Service frequency dropped to every 15 minutes. Service Also Extended From Mayfield To Orchard Grange Via Bryans & Newtongrange, & shortened from Clovenstone To Baberton Via Westburn Avenue. For Westside Plaza, Hailesland Road, Clovenstone Road, & Clovenstone Gardens, see updated service 21.
Service 15 - Service extended from Waterloo Place to Portobello ALDI Via Abbeyhill, Meadowbank, & Peirshill, & also shortened to Hillend. To bush, see new service 59. Mon-Sat frequency increased to every 30 minutes, & new Sunday service introduced between Tollcross & Portobello every 60 minutes.
Service 21 - Clovenstone Terminus moved from Clovenstone Road to Clovenstone Gardens to partly replace service 3.
Service 24 - Mon-Fri frequency increased to every 15 minutes - Every other journey will operate on a single decker & terminate at Drylaw Roundabout. Saturday & Sunday journeys remain unchanged.
Service 26 - Service curtailed at Strawberry Corner. For Prestonpans, Seton Sands, & Tranent, see changes to Lothian Country 113 & 124.
Service 29 - Frequency Increased to every 15 minutes, with every other journey terminating at Gilmerton.
Service X33 - Service withdrawn & replaced by service 3 & New service 56.
Service 37 - Bush journeys withdrawn & replaced by new service 55. Mon-Fri frequency reduced to every 20 minutes.
Service 46 - Renumbered As Service 57.
Service 48 - Renumbered As Service 58.
Service H50 - New express service between Hanover Street & Edin. Royal Infirmary via The Mound, Waverley Station, St. Mary’s Street, The Pleasance, Surgeons Hall, Newington, Craigmillar Park, Cameron Toll, & The Inch 24/7, Every 20-30 Minutes.

EastCoastBuses;
Services X5, X6, X7, 106, N107, N113, N124, 125, 126, 127, 128 - Services Moved From EastCoastBuses to Lothian Country (yes I took inspiration from @stevenedin, I think that it’s a smart move business-wise).
Service 113 - Service rerouted between Wallyford & Tranent Via 124 route to Blindwells North then via 26 Route to Tranent. Service 113 now serves Windygoul, & now operates under Lothian country.
Service 124 - Service rerouted between Levenhall Links & North Blindwells via 26 Route to Cockenzie & Port Seton, then via Long Craigs, Alder Road, & B6371 To North Blindwells. On Sundays, every other journey will operate directly between Port seton & Longniddry Bents.
Service 139, 140, & 141 - Services withdrawn & replaced by new Lothian services 52, 53, & 54.

Some of this works, but I’d have concerns such as cutting the 3 and 26 back.

I’m intrigued by your opinion, please could you explain further? I felt that the 21 & 3 are basically the same between Sighthill roundabout & Clovenstone (apart from the 3 terminating on Clovenstone Gardens & the 21 terminating on Clovenstone Road), & I feel that Lothian Buses should only make their services go as far east as Wallyford & no further, & the 26 is basically a glorified EastCoast 113.
