What zone is Elepahnt & Castle NR station actually in? On the NR site it says 1/2, but looking at the map on TFL site shows the NR station being in Zone 2 and the Underground being in Zone 1.

It wasn't readily apparent from that link where to find the answer.

Clicking on the "Ticket buying and collection tab" throws up, at the bottom,

"London fare zone Zone 1/2"

But not sure how that answers the OP's question.

It doesn't! I tried to amend the posting but couldn't. The station is in Zones 1 & 2, but I can't answer why the map says differently.

If you were looking at this map:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/london-rail-and-tube-services-map.pdf

then the answer is in the key on the left, all station names with a box round them are in 'both zones'. The exact position of the name is not important, if you compare with other dual zone stations on the rest of the map you can see thy are not standardised.

So yes, a zone 2-4 T/C is definitely valid there.

It's in Zone 1/2, meaning that if you only need validity in one of the zones (the side you approach from).

So a journey from the south (e.g. Wimbledon) would not require Zone 1 validity, whereas a journey from Zone 1 (e.g. Blackfriars) would not require Zone 2 validity.

But would a Zone 2-4 Travelcard work there? Would save me £20 on buying weekly Zone 1-4 ones.
It depends on what direction you are approaching from. You need a 1-4 Tvlcd if you will be travelling in Zone 1 at any point in your journey.
