During the overnight new years eve service on the Elizabeth line. There appeared to be a high amount of dead running (and rolling stock utilisation required for this)

You had trains terminating at Hayes, running ECS to Maidenhead carriage sidings and then back to Hayes again to go back in service.

Originally the trains were supposed to run on the fast platforms but they ran on the slow platforms. Even if they had ran on the fast platforms surely there was a siding or terminating platform they could have parked in closer than Maidenhead

This is what happens on the UK railway network. Just run the train to Maidenhead in passenger service!

No there isn't (without crossing to the Relief lines).
Even using the Reliefs and the West Drayton turnback you would require the same number of units.

That would have required an extra unit (unless you ran non-stop, which is guaranteed to confuse late-night passengers).
