I'm hearing reports about a collision between two freight trains at Penrith on the WCML. Driver apparently bailed from the loco and has broke his leg. No trains until further notice.

Hope all involved are okay and not too much damage caused.

Edit* 66186 and 66061 are the reported loco's too have been involved.

News & Star said:
A freight train has derailed on the West Coast Main line two miles north of Penrith, closing the railway.

Early reports suggest that two trains involved in track maintenance work collided, derailing one wagon and a locomotive.

The driver of one of the trains jumped clear before the collision.

It is understood he was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

Network Rail says that no trains are running between Oxenholme and Carlisle.

A derailed freight train near Penrith means trains are currently unable to run between Carlisle and Oxenholme Lake District. Buses are running between Carlisle and Lancaster. This is expected to continue until at least the end of today.
Alternative routes where tickets will be accepted
First TransPennine Express passengers may use CrossCountry and East Coast services between York and Edinburgh and ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central.
Virgin Trains passengers may use CrossCountry, East Coast, First TransPennine Express and ScotRail services on reasonable routes.

I was on the TPE Edinburgh to Manchester 1M99 service and it was cancelled at Carlisle. Got put on a bus to Penrith.
Now sitting in a Pendo at Penrith waiting for coach load and then the road south.

Been told the same - collision between two freight trains north of Penrith. Just been told they were engineering trains. Interestingly, we pulled out of Penrith heading north, crossed over and then went through again heading south.

*edit*
Just realised that we crossed over south of Penrith - left platform 2 heading north then back through heading South. Must be a signaling thing...?

The line might well have been under engineering possession, since mid-day Saturday Lancaster-Carlisle.

I'm relieved to hear the driver escaped with his life, it could have been ever so much worse.

Glad the driver is ok and as some posters have said it could easily have been much more serious.

Now waiting for Mr Crow to pop up out of the woodwork to give his opinion

There have been a couple of other collisions within engineering sites this weekend, this one by far the worse though. I wonder if the driver would have done better staying with the train rather than jumping off.

I would guess he looked at options and choose the best one.

From the National Rail Enquiries website at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/69004.aspx :

Buses are replacing trains between Carlisle and Penrith, extending journey times by up to 60 minutes. The line is not expected to reopen between Carlisle and Penrith until the start of service on Tuesday 14 January.

No doubt all concerned will be doing all that they can to get things running as soon as possible.

A potential diversion for the sleepers tonight?

Edit. It would appear not. 1S26 cancelled and 1S25 starting at Waverley, according to Journeycheck. Presumably vice versa on the southbounds.

I wonder if VT could divert over the S&C tomorrow?
It would save people having to get the bus part way.

Being such a proactive TOC I'm sure if they can they will. Maybe it will be up&running if the Rail safety bods don't drag their heels & get on with it.

as of 21 09 from national rail

An engineering train has derailed between Carlisle and Penrith, meaning the line has had to be shut between these stations.

I'm surprised to see Scotrail opening their Sleepers for passengers to kip in. Why not via ECML?

I believe there is a possession between Durham and Northallerton and also all trains must go via Hertford as there is a possession down there too.

Sunday evening too which I would suspect is a busy sleeper journey with people travelling to London for the working week!
