If someone has a full 1st Class fare (36EUR which is confusingly called Standard, hence the mention of the word in the title) from Milan to Lugano but misses the last Eurocity, will this fare be valid on Trenord services? Obviously they may have to forego the 1st Class bit, or endure an inferior product.

Not sure, but the Trenord fare to Chiasso is 6EUR in 2nd and 9 in 1st. From CH at least there should be no problem.

I very much doubt a Trenitalia fare is valid on Trenord in Italy.

The Trenitalia ticket is only valid on the booked train in Italy unless changed.

As above, from Chiasso it is probably valid as CH does not require a reservation.

Standard is the fare type, change/refund conditions. If it is similar to Base, the domestic flexible ticket, it can only be changed *before* departure time.

Trenord is the same journey time, more frequent, hourly and ticket valid any train on the day. Stadler units with a tiny first section, though not the same as long distance but it's only 1h15.

Ask in the International forum for people with wider knowledge of Italian ticketing.
