About 10 minutes ago, so about 00:55 Friday night / Saturday morning, I just saw a (old-style) Eurostar trundling through Stevenage station heading northbound through platform 2, non-stop. I didn't get a chance to count the carriages to tell if it was a normal one, or a NoL set.

Does anyone what it was, and why it was taking a midnight trip to Stevenage?

How old are these trains? Could they not be used elsewhere on the network?
This was discussed at-length in this thread. To summarise:
  • They are 20+ years old which is old for high speed trains.
  • They don't have the necessary equipment (power supply or signalling) to operate through services to anywhere on the continent other than their current destinations.
  • They are too long for most places on the UK network.
  • The single door per side carriages will increase dwell times compared to standard stock.
Plus some other points I can't remember.
