I'm just reading Stephen Gay's book "Through Kirton Tunnel" about the ex GCR line from Sheffield to Cleethorpes. In it he states that at the time the book was written (in 2004) the only booked trains on the line from Barnetby to Gainsborough* were the three e/w Saturdays only passenger trains, i.e. no booked freight trains.
I thought I read in RWM that the line was used more extensively now and in fact was to be upgraded. Does anyone know if the latter is correct, and, in fact, how many trains use the line now ?

The line is used by three passenger trains a week. Northern Rail operate 3 Sheffield-Cleethorpes services on a Saturday only. The first and last tend to use Class 153s, with the 2nd being a Pacer sometimes. One of the 153s, not sure which, swaps with the unit on the Barton line.

There are various freight trains along the route. GBRf and DBS run some coal trains along the route, they run from Eggborough, Cottam and West Burton Power Stations to Immingham. Also GBRf run some trains of coal hoppers from Doncaster Decoy to Immingham.

Hope this helps, Sam

Thanks for those answers chaps.
So they are rebuilding some of the line, that`s good news.
On average, around how many freight trains would use the route per week now ? It`s just so I can put a footnote (in pencil ! ) in the above mentioned book.
