25th November 2009

Northern will operate seven extra train services between Maryport and Workington, in addition to the normal timetable on Friday 27 November.
The only change from today, Thursday 26 November, is the introduction of a service from Maryport to Workington at 0725.
This will provide an additional peak service between the normal 0600 from Maryport and the normal 0821 from Maryport.
The extra services on Friday 27 November are:
0725 Maryport-Workington
0845 Workington-Maryport
0900 Maryport-Workington
1645 Workington-Maryport
1700 Maryport-Workington
1730 Workington-Maryport
1750 Maryport-Workington
All of these extra services will call at Flimby.
Northern will announce details of its timetable for Saturday and Sunday as soon as possible.

There is a rumour that it could be a Class 37 and 47 at either end of a rake of Mk2s operating a service next week, but it may be different times to those above.

This is with a Unit. The loco hauled turn is doing a bit more than just peak services.

2x 47`s and 37423 ive been told

Why would they have two duffs and a 37 on a few coaches going 5 mile up and back? Anyway thought most the 47's were busy on thunderbird duties in Anglia, presume it is anything with EH top and tail what ever is spare at KM.

Only the first part and the later sections to run on Friday 27th November
(ie 1000 MRY - WNG sits down to work 1550 WNG - MRY)

Further slight tweaks expected from Monday. Services expected to run for a number of wks/mths.

NORTHERN are also running some additional trains
Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November.
The normal timetable will operate on Saturday 28 November, and all train services will have at least two carriages.
On Sunday 29 November the railway line between Whitehaven and Carlisle will be open as usual at lunchtime, and Northern will operate the normal Sunday timetable AND ten extra services.

The extra services are as follows:
From Maryport to Workington at 1309; 1437; 1607; 1837; 2027
From Workington to Maryport at 1245; 1415; 1535; 1746; 1946
All services will call at Flimby station.

Northern's normal Sunday services on this part of the Cumbria coast are:
Whitehaven to Carlisle, leaving Whitehaven at 1257; 1628; 2028
Carlisle to Whitehaven, leaving Carlisle at 1500, 1900 and 2150

Northern is working on plans to operate extra services from Monday 30 November. The timings of these services will be announced as soon as possible so that customers can plan their journeys.
Note:
The strengthening of (some) services to more than 2-cars is not operationally normally feasable as trains booked to call at Flimby (Down platform) "must not have more than the leading two vehicles in public use. Additional vehicles can be conveyed but must be locked out of use between Sellafield and Carlisle and vice versa".

This restriction also applies to other stations between Sellafield & Carlise (but only FLIMBY is relevant here).

Also due to restrictive clearances, any passenger carrying vehicles with drop light windows that is required to operate between Maryport and Carlisle must have a Special Notice Issued (which specifies that no personnel should look out of a drop light window and all passengers must receive a brief to ensure compliance.
As the LHCS T/T is between MARYPORT and WORKINGTON, this avoids this problem.

Very good news.

Nice to see a Bus Replacement Train (since presumably the 30/31 are disrupted) rather than the more usual Rail Replacement Bus ;)

Any photos?

how many mark 2 coaches do cargo d have anyway?

i know that these additonal loco hauled services are expected to last for a number of weeks if not months so do cargo d have enough mark 2 coaches to work the cardiff - paignton diagram from december?

Is a drop light window what I think it is (like on a HST when you have to open the doors)? Plus does "looking out" mean sticking your head out?

Is the 'Dock/Harbour Railway Bridge' still used any more? It is damaged, just wondered whether any freight has been suspended?

That's right. This means you can sue the train operating company if you get drunk, and fall between the train and the platform. Judge John Reddihough has ruled that if a guard does not look out of openable windows then the train company is liable in the event of drunks fooling around. See this story. So Northern are potentially liable to pay a 6-figure sum for not being able to look out of the windows... (!!!) Follow-up here. The limbless association appear to be supporting the drunk. Shall I give them a donation? Err, nope!

For the record, I think it is a good idea for guards to be able to look out opening windows, however if they are unable to do so then there should not be any compensation available to anyone fooling around. The compensation laws in this country are an absolute joke.

Judge John Reddihough has ruled that if a guard does not look out of openable windows then the train company is liable in the event of drunks fooling around.
Yes, the prosecution never denied that Paul C-W, their client, had been "acting the goat" on the platform, but that didn't diminish their argument that Silverlink were responsible for his loss.

I think it is a good idea for guards to be able to look out opening windows, however if they are unable to do so then there should not be any compensation available to anyone fooling around.
In this case it was argued that Silverlink (and by extrapolation, all passenger rail operators) should do everything that it possibly could to prevent such an incident. In defence, Silverlink's expert witness pointed out the safety reasons for guards' windows NOT opening and guards doors NOT being kept open during self-despatching, (reasons which include intrusion and attack by late passengers, availability of despatching from different doors, passengers attempting to open doors by reaching through drop windows, etc). But despite the evidence of accidents being PREVENTED by having non-opening guards' windows on the Cl313, Reddihough J was not persuaded that rail operators had done enough to prevent injury to someone "acting the goat".
You can read the judgement here. Paras 47-51 discusses opening guards' doors and windows

Did it last Wednesday for 37423 and spoke to the guard, he seemed to reckon they were confirmed until Jan 5th but could run after that depending on demand.

i got to travel on it yesterday, and have to say it was much better than the usual scruffy 153's and 156's we get on the line! shame its only temporary :(
